From the Mason City School District:

Our Mason City educators have been working deliberately toward getting all of our children and students to mastery levels in reading and in math. You will see in this report that our trends are uneven in all areas. We were not successful in at least two subgroups on the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills. Through analysis of the 2011 Iowa test data it was clear that at-risk students in the low SES (Socio-economic status) and IEP (Individual Education Plans) sub-groups within all grade level clusters are still struggling in achieving proficiency on these measures.

We are designated as a District in Need of Assistance (DINA) 3 in Reading and DINA 1 in math. At this point in time sanctions under the current No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) regulations are enforced. I am pleased that three years ago, our district chose to voluntarily participate in the DINA process. Because of our prior work, we are in a very positive place in addressing areas that will continue to improve our work with the children and youth in our schools and our teaching staff.

The DINA study process produced three focus areas: Instructional Leadership, Iowa Core alignment and Assessment for Learning or Formative Assessment. We are currently engaged in the development and training of DATA TEAMS district-wide to provide teachers with time and tools.
