MASON CITY – The Lime Creek Nature Center has three events coming up for the public to choose from.

A “For Seniors Only” program will be held on Friday, September 20 at 10 a.m. at the Lime Creek Nature Center.

Guest speaker Jen Kurth, Natural Resources Biologist for the Iowa DNR, will discuss Iowa’s amazing freshwater mussels that can be found in many of our state’s rivers and streams.  These organisms are valuable components of freshwater biodiversity and healthy ecosystems, and help keep the water clean by acting as Mother Nature’s water filters.  For something that looks like a living rock, they have a unique life cycle and interesting adaptations to the environment in which they live.

The program will be followed by a catered lunch and social time.  Cost is $5.00 for nature center members and $7.00 for nonmembers.  Please call 423-5309 by 4 p.m. September 19 to register.

A program entitled “Canoeing the Boundary Waters” will be held on Monday, September 23 at 7 p.m. at the Lime Creek Nature Center.

Todd Von Ehwegen, Conservation Education Manager for the Cerro Gordo County Conservation Board, will provide the program about this area considered by some as the most beautiful wilderness they have ever seen.

Located in Northeastern Minnesota, the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) encompasses a million acres with over 1,000 pristine lakes and streams, and over 1500 miles of canoe routes.  National Geographic named it one of Fifty Destinations of a Lifetime.

This program will provide all of the information needed to plan a trip to this wonderful destination, including equipment, trip planning, food, fishing, and helpful resources.  There is no charge but please call 423-5309 to register.

The fifth annual Lime Creek Nature Center “Timber Trot” will be held on Saturday, October 5 at 9 a.m. at the Lime Creek Nature Center located just north of Mason City off Highway 65.

A $20 entry fee includes refreshments and a long-sleeve “tech” shirt.  Registration deadline for a guaranteed shirt is Wednesday, September 25 at 4 p.m.  Registration the day of the event is $25.

Medals will be awarded for first, second and third place for both male and female runners in the following age categories: 20 and under, 21-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60 and over.

This five-mile trail run is for everyone from those who enjoy competing against others to those who just want to take a leisurely jog for some great scenery and exercise.

To register call Carrie Berg at 641-210-7005 or download a registration brochure at:www.co.cerro-gordo.ia.us (click on outdoors).  A map of the route is available at this website.
