Man drowns in Big Blue

MASON CITY – Police confirmed late Saturday that a man drowned in the Big Blue pit on Mason City’s southwest side.

According to police, at about 6:15 PM Saturday, the Mason City Police Department received a 911 call from citizens regarding an adult male subject that had possibly drowned at Ray Rorick Park, (Big Blue), located 1180 15th St. S.W. The caller reported that several citizens had pulled an adult male from the waters and had started to perform C.P.R. on him.

Responding officers and Mason City Fire Paramedics arrived on scene a short time later to render first aid. The adult male, later identified as John Ernest Beery, age 79 of Mason City, Iowa was transported to Mercy Hospital East Campus by Mason City Fire where he was pronounced dead.

Assisting in the investigation was the Mason City Police Department General Crime Division and the Medical Examiners Office.

  1. Who cares. The man drowned at big blue. Pretty sure people don’t need a park name of a park 20 feet in one direction.

  2. Hi Matt, Correction, It is Lester Milligan Park, not Ray Rorick Park. Ray Rorick Park is just east of Big Blue. There the Parks & Recs have the skate board half pipe and the arena next to it. FYI.
