At about 1:30 p.m., a 38-year-old male driving a 2000 BMW with California license plates arrived at the border crossing to be inspected by a CBP officer.
During his inspection, the driver claimed to be a U.S. citizen, but was unable to provide any documentation to establish his identity. The CBP officer referred the car and driver for a more intensive inspection.
During the inspection, a CBP officer with a human/narcotic detector dog screened the car, and the canine alerted to the undercarriage. CBP officers looked under the vehicle, and noticed liquid leaking from a seam to the left of the gas tank, and that the liquid was crystallizing. CBP officers tested the crystallized liquid, and established that it was liquid methamphetamine. The gas tank was removed and revealed two compartments, one with gasoline, and one with the narcotics. CBP officers found a total of about 46 pounds of liquid methamphetamine.
CBP officers seized the narcotics and the vehicle, and turned the driver over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents. The driver was booked into the Metropolitan Correctional Center and will face prosecution by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in San Diego.
