Sandusky lawyer seeking new trial

STATE COLLEGE, Pa., Feb. 21 (UPI) — Former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky’s attorney says he plans to appeal for a new trial in the child sex abuse case against his client.

Sandusky’s lawyer Joe Amendola gave written notice Thursday that he plans to appeal Judge John Cleland’s decision last month denying defense’s request to throw out the verdict and retry Sandusky, Centre Daily Times, State College, Pa., reported.

Amendola said the defense team did not have enough time to prepare for Sandusky’s first trial because the judge did not give him continuances. However, Cleland disagreed, saying Amendola failed to show how Sandusky’s defense was compromised.

In June 2012 Sandusky was found guilty on 45 counts of child sexual abuse. Amendola is appealing Cleland’s decision to the Pennsylvania Superior Court.
