Historic Park Inn Hotel to open eatery; how nice. The long awaited restaurant is finally scheduled to open. The city has been rife with rumors concerning that empty space that borders the ally on the west side of the complex. Finally today’s Sunday paper, along with its top feature writer has broken the news. A chef has been hired, training is under way and soon the kitchen will be filled with aromatic aromas….but will any of those aromas fill my nostrils with garlic and more to the point will my highly educated palate be bathed in virgin olive oil? Highly unlikely, most doubtful, all odds point the other direction. More than likely this kitchen will turn out Presbyterian food and everyone knows there has never been a bulb of garlic anywhere near the Presbyterian church or even in the parking area.
I know the Presbyterians are well nourished and in no danger from falling over because of malnutrition …but they can keep you alive by running a bag of nutrients through your veins at the hospital as well. I know… I know the Presbyterians warm their bags first.
I look forward to dining at this new culinary star on our local landscape; but more to the point I look forward to writing the review for all of North Iowa including all other destinations the Internet travels. My fervent prayer is laced with high hopes for these folks, they can count on the Presbyterians and a few Congregationalists…maybe even a few Lutherans will show up.
Opening night will be a gala affair; all the men will get their suits dry cleaned and not just pressed, the women will sparkle and if the management is smart they will bring in a string ensemble to divert the fact that there is really no garlic in the kitchen.

what would you expect from “children”?
any garlic at the park inn, ever, and i been in there a plenty. Shows how low class the joint is.
Must be another Democrat. Never happy about anything.
That makes no sense, why would you there is no food yet…garlic is not associated with class…
About garlic
JESUS!!!! Who cares???????????????
Restaurants, historically, run a 10 to 12 percent profit…provided it does normal business. With all of the downtown restaurants now open I would seriously doubt it will pay for itself…just as the Inn will never come close to breaking even. 1. The group running it isn’t in the charity business. 2. The group not running in it must be associated with Obama as they have no clue how to run a hotel much less a restaurant.
In my several surveys downtown, I have noted a crowd of locals who frequent the tavern in the Hotel on a very regular basis. (my survey was for a month on both weekdays and weekends.)
I also noted especially on Saturday evenings, the Hotel was busy, and the other eateries were either closed or empty, save one. The busiest establishment on Federal was Dollar General (Fareway had more cars, but was not included as being on Federal).
I ask myself often, how many resturants can our city handle. Those that served up food other than the uninspired fast food or blah, seem to hang around, while those who offered interesting or unique foods, do not. Shame if you ask me.
When the food is expensive no one eats there. We live in a city where most people can’t afford a $20 plate of food, especially if the don’t know what the heck it is.
This is how it works. He writes things that provoke you. You react, good or bad it really doesn’t matter, it increses traffic.
If any of you could decifer what he says I’d be shocked. Light up and go back in the closet
Well haters got to hate I guess and Peter Children is defiantly a hater, all he has to do is write negative articles about positive situations. Where does garlic even come into play??? It doesn’t! I for one am very excited that the restaurant at the Park Inn is going to be opening soon! Just another positive thing to add to this great city, but seriously can we stop acting like we are 4 years old, if you are a “writer” don’t make stuff up, it makes you look stupid, not to mention you can always just get the FACTS, which is your job…it’s called research! Let’s get our act together….
The truth of the garlic matter is that ALL the employess of the hotel are vampires. The restaurant employees will refrain from using garlic in return for not being turned into vampires themselves. Thats the deal they had to make.
=Just as ridiculous as what Peter thinks he knows.
People, do not take anything this nutjob says as fact. He is trying to act smart but how would he know about the financial situation of the hotel or anything about the soon to be open restaurant. I hope he doesn’t get paid to write these articles.
First things first; I don’t hate anyone…well maybe just one person, and its not the mayor. I certainly do not hate any religion or churches. I was merely writing satire, tongue & cheek about the culinary tastes of the Midwest which tend to lean towards meat and potatoes. We all grew up in different houses with different likes and dislikes. My was an Orthodox home and soon I will write about it to make some things clear. Soon. I am a religious art publisher and have beenfor close to 40 years…I sell religious art all over this country. I am not mad at Jesus that’s for sure, I made a lot of money with him.
Not the mayor?
So it’s Tornquist then?
Oh . . . you meant me. I get it now.
Sorry, I’m a little slow today. I was high on the aromatic aromas of garlic.
I like a whole lot of garlic on my lutefisk.
Peter. Do you know for a fact that there is no garlic to be used? Or are you assuming so? You know what happens when you assume.
If you don’t know for sure about this, then shame on you for this negative article AGAIN!!!!
It seems like 99.9% of this site spouts negativeism. I for one am sick of it. Where is the fair and balanced? Lets post about the good things here. Oh I see. It doesn’t hold our interest.
Peter didn’t stand up for himself here.
That tells me one thing. This article is
nothing but speculation. Not the facts.
There you go folks. Garlic probably is
available for seasoning at the new Park Inn
Restaurant. Peter just likes to sound off.
It is amazing to me that Peter Children can see into the future without knowing anything about it. I can assume (as much as he does) that we are in under the watchful eye of a modern-day Nostrodamus.
I would bet that Peter can also predict the menu, the prices, and the wine list. It seems to me that Peter could also tell us about things that the average person could only speculate about.
Either way I hope that he does go to the restaurant when it opens (probably pay with cash because your name may not make friends) to see what is truly about.
Petey, So you hate the Presbyterians, Congregationalists, and Lutherans too, and not just Bookmeyer, Tornquist, and the Globe Gazette? Could you please just post a list of everyone and everything you hate? It is getting hard to keep track without a score card.
How about a SHORT post on what he likes!!!
He can’t help hating. He’s Greek, its just how those people are! Its in their blood.
Dude, He’s not Greek. Stop giving the Greeks a bad name.
The sun came up this morning. Water is still wet. Peter Children thinks something else is not being done to his satisfaction and feels he has to let people know about it. Pretty standard day in north Iowa.
Maybe petey should run it since he’s a pro on cuisine and libations. I’m up for a ‘pinch’ of Greek!!
Mr. Children is Serbian.
Will this restaurant and the bar at the hotel be paying property taxes and if not…WHY!
Excwllet qwuestion
Sorry for the typo; meant to say, Excellent question
Must have had too many bottles of “garlic” today.
Great, just what this town needs, more bland foods and cream soups (something naturally occuring only in N. Iowa)!
Peter hates the Globe and Presbyterians. Got it.
All greek to me !!!!
Of course it would be a good bet to assume the hotel is losing money…but the real point is that it is making money for the city. I will keep saying it…it needs to be subsidized the same as the Museum. It will never turn a profit, it is impossible to think it ever would. On the other hand it “needs” to remain open. Will the cafe put it in the black? No it will not. The way it now appears the hotel will be operating it; lets wait and see.
I’m only wondering how long before they admit to the public – that the Hotel is NOT cutting it profit wise… Just think those that know how it is going admit they need help!
I don’t mean that in a negative way, but we are not blind & can do simple math to see that the hotel needs to be full to capacity most of the time to run in the black.
