Today at my work someone came in said the kid that took off last summer with his mother car was found out of state think his name is jordon cops where at his home today said he killed himself. anybody know if that’s true

If city and county elected officials were treated with respect and courtesy, the will return the same. You can can investigate what you believe to be inappropriate or unethical behavior but still be respectful and courteous.

…I did see the Hootenanny proposal. Very cut and dry trade out.
I have to tell everyone what I heard this morning at my regular stop at Pies and More in Willowbrook Mall.One of the people there are on one the the boards at the Events Center.
He was telling us the the board last night voted down an offer made by the concert people Hootenanny.
Hootenanny offered ALL beer and booze sales for their concerts in a simple exchange for a $1500 credit for building rental on each concert.
THE BOARD VOTED NO.
Just who are the idiots on the voting board? Do they realize the value of having that many people together at one event?
They are missing out on thousands in alcohol sales.
This is why North Iowa has given up on these people,terrible decisions are being made.
I stopped down and talked with the owner of Hootenanny in the same Mall. He confirmed the decision. He said that boards members came to him to offer alcohol, he really had to be talked into the offering to begin with…he said, so this current decision is certainly a head scratcher.
Sounds like they learned a lesson from the last decade. Too big to fail.
I just had to say these people at Hootenanny have this counties and the local businesses as a driving force to bring their concerts here. It’s a shame that the Event Center boards have lost touch of the true aspects of business. Yet another in a long stream of mistakes. The owners of Hootenanny are kind, pleasant and caring people. This is truly a shame to have to fight an aging board.
Doesnt Visit Mason City have anything to do with the events center? Why would they not step in and simply crunch the numbers for a concert and then give a directive to the board either for or against. Its simply common sense, if you get 1500 people there for a concert a beer costs the distributer less than a dollar and you could charge 3 dollars thus tripling your money, and these are not firm numbers just a scenario.
Sue Armour of Visit Mason City does a great job in making money for the city, give her a chance to make money and she will. From what i have heard she has been under the thumb of Robin Anderson and Robin is jealous of any success that Sue has had.
Were is the County Board? Why are they allowing these boards to exist? This is plainly a bad decision. Clint Black/Mark Chesnutt/Susi Boggus will pack the house…

They are extremely pompous and arrogant, however, so be prepared to be ignored or brushed aside. Now, if you bring them food, they might listen.

Sue Armor is an amazing person, educated, intelligent, and a wonderful business person. Not to mention, she is an extremely nice person. Robin Anderson has none of these qualities!
As a matter of fact when looking for a person to run against Bookmeyer for mayor Sue Armour would be a great choice. I know that is a strong statement, but she has the qualities needed to do a great job as mayor, and I am talking about not only the experience in dealing with state agencies, chambers, or being a good decent person. The real strong point is she would not take any crap from Robin or her hairbrained ideas. The my friends is a win-win.

I was wondering in lue of the recent board voting at the Events Center if any party on the board makes any monies on the side from the events held there.
I heard at one time a board member made money from the liquor sold there? I also head that one of the previous GM’s there accepted a trip to Vegas from a vender, which supposedly violates the governing rules? Down to one officer in Northwood, mayor doesn’t give anyone a chance to speak at meeting for the support of Denny and KIMT states that the sheriff office is helping and all they are doing is the paperwork for the one officer (that contract hasn’t been signed yet).

I go for walks in east park almost every day, and I can’t tell you how many times I have seen the dog catcher parked down there talking on her cell phone, or just snacking on something. And this can be any time of the day, morning or afternoon.
When I worked at the Globe, I used to see my co-workers doing that. Now, they are around town wiping tables, working cash registers, or making donuts.
Why haven’t we heard much about the girl stealing while cleaning houses in Osage? It’s not on OPD website that she was even arrested? She stole over $15,000 from people and blamed it all on their kids until the hidden cameras said otherwise.
a crime never happens unless it is publicized. I know of a few break ins in waterloo that the police didnt want publicized. “they didnt want the criminals to get any information”.

The Northwood police dept. is getting cut back so much that the two remaining officers are about to quit. I think the mayor wants to hand it over to the sheriff dept.
Justin Nerlien I think, talked to his dad last night and he said Justin was quitting. They want these 2 to work just 40 hours a week with no overtime. Cops don’t have set hours and they are already down, they are supposed to have 4 officers.
What I don’t get is that the council doesn’t care about the people in town. There was a sheet taken to town hall with almost 50 signatures wanting to give one of the officers a chance at chief and it doesn’t matter.

Matt, the city is holding a meeting tonight at 7PM at the Northwood City Hall specifically to discuss the police department and the police chief. This meetings notice was given only a few minutes prior to the 24hr notice deadline. Not many people know about this meeting and thats the way the city council likes it. You should attend tonights city council meeting.

I get really irritated when the GG doesn’t say whether it is the defense or the prosecution that is asking for a continuance on cases. The Behm trial has now been moved to November. Matt, can you find out which party asked for the continuance? That case will be nearly 2 years old by then. Is there no time limit on bringing cases to trial?
I was wondering the same thing. When are the Behm’s finally going to go on trial and finally be locked up in jail where they belong??
You can review the court files as an order should enter showing who asked for the continuance or whether it was a joint request. Or you can go to pre-trial conferences on Tuesday mornings or Friday afternoons.
I have no idea where or how to review court files. Can it be done online?
You can check Iowa Courts On-Line. That should have some of the information including most of the information that shows up in articles in NIT. You can also go to the Courthouse and ask to see the file. There may be some confidential information but that would not include routine motions or orders.

It is possible there will be some construction in the area during the upcoming building season. We did a concept plan review for a three-tenant commercial building a few weeks ago. We don’t know yet if the project will move forward. The next step in the process is submittal of a preliminary site plan. We haven’t received one yet nor have we received confirmation about who the tenants would be.

This rant kind of goes along with the cities vendetta against the sanitation dept. While I don’t want to see anyone lose their job, I think that the city should look at animal control. I,ve seen the animal control truck sitting in Menards parking lot several times, out at NIACC, and as far south as the Rose Bowl. I’m sure they will say that they got calls from those areas, and who’s to say different. If you read the news paper, you’ll see very few people getting fined for dog problems. I see dogs running loose every time I venture across town, especially in the parks. I’m just saying, wear and tear on the vehicle, miles driven, gas used, eight hours pay for driving around town daily just doesn’t add up. If you think that I’m wrong, just keep your eyes open for the truck, it will be around soon.

Electricity is back on opens at 7pm Thursday night. State Code does not ban them and cities can not pass codes that supercede state law. Ask Clear Lake about their loss to the Marina owner. To bad he lost his bar over allowing smoking.

He sold liquar and rules are different for those who hold a liquar license. He tried to have a wet T-Shirt contest and strippers without a permit. CL doesn’t allow stripping within 1000 ft. of a school. They can legaly have that code.
The “juice bar” in Corwith claim they won’t serve liquar. That’s why strippers can strip.

Nothing to whine about today. Just some GOOD news…
Went to Ruby Tuesday last night and ordered my favorite, salmon. For the first time ever (we go there a lot), I was told they were out of salmon. Not only were they very apologetic, they took the cost of my entire meal off our bill. We didn’t ask for this; they offered.
Just another reason (besides the great salad bar) why this is our favorite restaurant.
Ruby Tuesday is also my favorite restaurant in MC. We always have great service and the food is always great. If something isn’t right, they always fix it and the manager always checks to make sure it is now satisfactory. Only problem is, the salad bar fills me up and I can’t eat all the main course. Doggy bag, please!
We’ve recently re-discovered Hunan. Food has always been excellent, and the staff always friendly. The Japanese Lantern is pretty good too, however be prepared to wait if they’re busy. Being closed on Monday doesn’t help either. However, their sushi is worth it. 🙂
Living in North Iowa, Cerro Gordo County and Mason City is great. We have an excellent entertainment facility at NIACC which brings in musicals, plays and music. Our community theater is 2nd to none as is Stebens. We have nice museums and a great library. If you need a change or a bigger city fix Des Moines and Minneapolis are only 2 hours away. We have wonderful restaurants some which have been established for years and others that are new and innovative (I just wish we had Italian).
Complain all you want. I am happy there are people willing to take the abuse directed their way. Some people in Mason City have always seem to resent others that are successful.
Don’t complain, get involved. A healthy debate minus the rants and name calling can only be good for our community.

I’ll add that there is also a beautiful lake and parks and outdoor recreational areas. Many events are held in the area that are family oriented.
Kudos to anyone who steps up to the plate to make the area an area to be proud of. It takes money to do that but it is money well spent.

And I bet they only piss and moan on here. Do they go to the meetings of the boards they disagree with? Do they email or write to the members of the boards or councils with how they feel, or more importantly, their solutions to problems? I think that everything will stay as it is because what there really is only a vocal minority in this community and they aren’t voicing their opinions to the people who matter. It is the group that complains on this website and the group of friends they talk to. But they are in the minority in this town. People don’t want the kind of discord and disruption there was on the council when Max was on it. There is no hard proof of any wrong-doing in most cases – just innuendo, personal attacks, and disagreement with decisions. I don’t agree with all decisions and I’m not thrilled with performance of the EDC, but not everything is going to get an A all the time. And I have voiced my opinions to the parties that matter.
Which is why we need civilized debate. If you speak about a subject to “those that matter”, it helps to be prepared and have stats about and a proposed solution to the problem.
The name calling between elected officials has trickled down and had led to many of the problems we have. Respect goes a long way. Talk about subjects, don’t lecture.
why is niacc building new student housing that comes close to housing twice the current population when last year enrollment was down?

Allegations of corruption are accusations of a criminal offense. That is actionable as defamation even if it is an opinion unless it is actually true. The 1st amendment is not an absolute right or protection. A public official may have a more difficult time establishing the willful disregard for the the truth but a private individual does not have that same burden.
After watching the billionth Mediacom commercial about how great they are and ‘appointments on your schedule’ and best for business . . . I had to write and ask does anyone buy this bs?
Save some marketing dollars and put the money into their customer service. Seriously, it took me 4 months of record keeping and getting through to a supervisor to get my bill straightened out.
Based on my own home experiences, there is no way I would ever have them for my business provider!!
you are correct. i gave up on them some time ago. Even at the same time they advertised repairs at your time. day or night. I had to wait 2 weeks for a serviceman to come out. mediacom sucks
I’ve called and spoke to 2-4 different office people and gotten different answers to the same question. Depends on how long they’ve worked there. In one case of mine one gave me a deal while the other denied I was eligible.
I don’t like the idea period of having to pay to watch shows. The good ol days were better accept for the limited # of channels.
Direct TV! I’ve had Direct TV for two years now and I bought my service local through PR Connections! I’ve had to have them come out for a service once, and they were here within an hour of when I called. There was no “sometime between noon and four” crap. I’ve had great service and I love the channels that Direct TV offers. I would recommend PR Connections to anyone!!!!!!!!!
I had dish service once. couldnt watch tv in the rain or bad weather. was installed in the winter. found out when the leaves filled the trees that i didnt get all my channels. leaves blocked satellite. since it was past the initial set up time i had to pay for all repairs. never again.
That must have been a very long time ago. I have many large old trees in my yard and neighboring yards, and have never, ever had a problem. Not with leaves, snow, anything. I’ve never had a signal lost in the two years I’ve had the service.
this was maybe 5-6 years ago. I also have many mature trees. never thought about leaves when installed in the winter. however yes NO service in the rain or snow and only lost half channels because of not receiving a satellite.
Just reading the most recent Consumer Digest. They rated all the major tv, internet, and phone providers in the US. Mediacom came in last in tv, phone, and 2nd to last in internet. Last in bundled services also.lowest in service satisfaction and value. How can they stay in business?

I am glad that I live in a community that has schools that value kids safety unlike Garner. I just can’t believe that they are kicking the city kids to the street and not providing busing to them.
The school board members even admitted that there were insufficient crossing guards and cross walks for kids.
Yes, I understand that they legally do not have to for kids that live within 2 miles…but geez…what mediocrity!
It appears to me that their superintendent is just being lazy. Instead of addressing the real safety issue, he is only worried about liability. Kick kids to the street…he is not liable for the them.

I agree safety is important but Garner isn’t a metropolis crime ridden city. For most kids school isn’t that far away. And in Garner EVERYBODY knows your name and watches what EVERYBODY is doing or saying. The walk will do them good after sitting on the couch playing video games. Kids aren’t active enough these days. Funny how kids can play outside but some parents think a walk to school is too much for them. I have a feeling it’s the parents not wanting to get off their hineys and away from the computer to take their kid to school.

Getting kids to school has become a sad disappoint compared to what I remember as a child. Daily on my way to work I see parents pushing their kids out the door to walk alone while they stand inside in pajamas smoking away in the warmth, I see kids standing at corners waiting for busses not properly dressed for the weather. Parents as well as schools need to do more to ensure a safe and happy trip to school. On a positive note I am happy that mason city has adults who walk the children to bus stops an wait until all kids are safely on their ride! More measures like this should take place.
