People talk and complain about the food stamp situation. Food stamp people are nothing but bottom feeders who are so used to getting the free money that it doesn’t bother them what people say. They aren’t embarrassed at all about abusing the system. To them it’s their right and they are going to suck it for all it’s worth.

farmers are in that situation also.

you are so full of crap! not everyone on foodstamps is a bottom feeder. am I on them, no. but to lump everyone together like that, you are an idiot.

@just saying-you are out of line with that bottom feeder crap. There are some people that are temporarily down on their luck and need a little help to get back on their feet and then there are people who are sick and can’t work because of it and need the help to live a somewhat decent life. These people I don’t mind helping out. The ones that abuse the system are able to do it because of the rules and the government doing a give away program. They are the ones that piss me off.

concerning the food stamp outrage. I can understand why everyone is upset. but like I said, it is not illegal to buy candy. AND IT IS “NOT” ANY OF YOUR BUSINESS. like others have said there are many many ways rich people milk the system. not only in north iowa. If you want to bitch, then bitch at the farmers who get free money for not working. (once again another poster brought that one up) this is why i said what i said. If you dont like it then change the law. I know thats hard for one person to do but if the police and city can tell me that. then i can say it to everyone here too. We learn from our elders and supervisors. If the government, police, IRS, big business can do it then why not me? like another person said. this is what our country is coming to and I think the problem has started at a higher level and trickled down.
one person said she wasnt on food stamps and worked hard for her money. how do you know the person buying the candy wasnt a hard working person (maybe even harder than you) and only got 7.25 per hour. with NO insurance, or benefits. Ya know what. when I work, I work hard. I dont set behind a fukn desk all day in the AC. Not to say you do, but lets face it some people dont really work as hard as alot of minimum wage earners do. Plus without any benefits. HELL, some peoples benefits are worth more than $7.25 per hour. Stop bitching at the poorer people who didnt have the opportunity to go to college, didnt have a daddy to help get a cushy job or whatever.
Finally: I think candy ,pop, cigs, beer, and such should NOT BE INCLUDED FREE WITH FOOD STAMPS. But there are way more reasons to bitch in this world than this. therefore since it is NOT illegal, either change it or stop complaining.
One last thing. how do you know for sure they spent $20 on candy alone. Were you looking over their shoulder or just giving us a guess to make the story read better? I think you said 3 for $1.00. did you actually count out 60 pieces of candy, Look at their bill, or just estimate????

none of your business, as a tax payer, who is paying for these programs, it certainly is our business.

tax dollars being wasted outrages you??? WEll then pay no attention to the goverment who blows millions daily.. Mind your business and let people live how they want,

I agree with DS. there are many people wasting tax money. Go bitch at them if your a tax payer. everyone gets benefits in some way. The more money you make the more bennies you can milk too.

Everyone gets benefits in some way???

WHAT?!

I’m wondering what benefits I get that I don’t PAY FOR MYSELF…..

I bitch about everything that waste my tax dollars, that is my right. as far as letting people live as they want, they can, just don’t expect me to pay for it

MY VOICE do you get or take any tax deductions. if you do then theres just one way you are not paying for all you should. This and other situations, are what I meant about everyone in some way gets breaks.

ONLY the child credit.

That’s it.

No other deductions.

@one who knows….Thank You!!!! Yes, if we are paying for it, then Yes we have every right to complain!

many businesses are getting kickbacks even in mason city. how much did Harley get. $100000.00? oil companies get gov subsidies and do you think THEY need it. The problem isnt with food stamp people its with the government that deals out money and subsidies to WAY to many organizations. Pet projects you might say.

well im sure someone will correct me but harley received 100000 for improvements but they had to chip in 1 million of there own money, lets not forget Mormon clothiers has received free money 2 times the later for the tune of 100000 but nobodies crying about that

to my voice, why do you listen to other people, go and listen yourself and then decide. personally I have had the opportunity to fill in on occasion as a drummer for his band, and I think he is good. my guess is he will be doing solo acoustical guitar

Hmm, that could be interesting. I love Acustic Guitar.

Thank you!

Food stamps and farm subsidies are both part of the Farm Bill. Hmmmmm… I wonder who needs the help more? Could it be people who have lost their jobs, can’t get jobs, or who have had medical emergencies? Or should we give it to the farmers who are already making millions BEFORE they get their millions in subsidies? This is a tough one!

Yes, there are abusers in the food stamp program. But we have plenty of abusers in the farm, oil & banking industries. It’s really shameful that they get away with this.

Anyone hear this Bill Grant play before? I see he’s gonna play tomorrow at the MCPL. I was told he sucks and don’t wasted my time.

Lol…sorry, waste my time.

There has been some talk lately about South Federal Ave, and its downfall. I for one think it is on a bit of a upswing…why? Starting with Harley Davidson..it is a nice building yes with some help from the city, but it certainly is an improvement. Down the road is a new amish furniture store, I have been in there and its very nice with all American made furniture. Across the street in the old Community Bank drive thru Borealas coffee is putting in a new store…The Kum and Go is fairly new and looks better than a lot of the other stores of its type.

Yes there is a lot more that could be done but South Federal is making a bit of a comeback and to me is looking better all the time, and even more importantly these business are doing it on their own with their own money with the exception of Harley. To those new business and older business who have cleaned up their storefronts…keep up the good work!

@common sense man-glad to hear you think it is improving. I really don’t. All I see when I go there is a falling down shopping center and lots of used car lots. Maybe some are fixing up their business and if they are doing it without tax help I am glad to hear that. Harley should look good as he has a lot of tax dollars to do it with. I grew up in the south end and can remember how many stores and businesses there use to be and it is depressing to see it now.

@LVS Have to agree on you with this one. I grew up not two blocks from federal and I can remember going over to the shopping center when I was bored and go from store to store just walking around keeping cool on a hot summer day. Look at it now and it is depressing. I know there are somethings down at that end but nothing like it use to be. I miss the Piggle Wiggle store and A&W.

anybody know what they are building out by walmart I heard its a i hop ? and what a bought long johns silver ?

Stopped by HyVee today. They had Skittles and Starburst candies on sale 3 for a dollar. The people in front of me at the checkout aisle had $20 worth of these candies and a cart full of pop, and paid for all of it with their food stamp debit card. This is NOT what these cards are intended for. I clip coupons, watch the ads, and live on a grocery budget. This really pisses me off!

I was on food stamps for a while and I can tell you it makes me sick to see what some people do. I remember I saved up enough to buy a quarter of beef and when I told someone this they were upset that I could get a quarter of a beef. What I did was buy just enough each month to get by with until I had enough to get a quarter of beef. I bought can goods when they were on sale and used coupons for paper products. I was not proud to have to use them but I was proud to use them in the right way.

@hmmmm-No problem with someone needing food stamps that really needs the help. Everyone could use a little help now and then. It sounds like you were not cheating and didn’t stay on it. The people who don’t try and think we owe them a living is the ones I don’t care for. The ones that really need it should be helped but the cheats are stealing from them as well as you and me.

the food stamp program is part of the farm bill. I believe states get money from the feds and each state runs their program. I asked rep. Sharon steckman several years ago why candy, junk food, and soda are allowed. she didn’t know they could get those things on ebt, and was going to look into it and call me back. never heard back

this is for everyone complaining about what people buy with food stamps. If it wasnt legal for them to buy it with food stamps, them the stores would not accept the food stamps. Like the police and city always say. If you dont like it, then change the law. Until then STFU. the price for the candy was a cheap price as was stated. JESUS CHRIST dont complain because they were stocking up when items were cheap. Whats the problem? they get more than you could? I have to buy when its cheap and use it later to save money. thats smart shopping as I see it. On the other hand I would NOT be against any of you trying to change the law. If you dont like cigerettes, beer, candy, soda, pet food, prostitutes, being paid with food stamps, thats OK with me. But until you do something and change the law, DONT BITCH

If that is what they believe in Hampton I am sure glad I don’t live there.

@ 50 miles….I am NOT upset that they have more than I do. I’ve worked my butt off for everything I have and have not asked for help once. I am proud that I have not needed assistance. You say stock up on candy and pop while it’s cheap? Are you serious? Then the kids get cavities and have to go to the dentist and they are on title 19, so I’m paying their dentist bills for them “stocking up” on junk. I’m tired of people abusing the system. I buy my groceries, and the last thing on my shopping list is candy, even if it is cheap. I pay for my children’s school lunches which is quite costly. So we pay for the free school lunches so the kids can go home and have pop and candy. Seriously???????????

@ 50 miles, LVS, Katie….I have really have come to enjoy your comments not that I always agree with them. You have demonstrated a Conservative point of view and I can really relate to that. This is a tricky subject. I agree with pretty much all that each of you said. On one hand I totally agree with Katie and LVS, on the other hand I get where you 50 miles is coming from however, no disrespect 50, I am going to lean more to LVS and Katie here. You right but how do you know that LVS and Katie OR myself don’t do our part to change the law. I vote. I speak My Voice. I can’t change the law alone but I do what I can. Therefore I feel the right to bitch about it. It is ridiculous to me that my tax dollars go to help pay for a cart full of soda and skittles regardless if they were bought on 50 cents on the dollar. That’s not the point here. The point is and should be that the “support” given should be for necessities to sustain the family. Sorry, cheap ass skittles and soda don’t fall into that category for me.

I guess I just have a problem with the people that take advantage of the system. The goes for the crap the IRS is doing with all their “lush” gifts and the EPA with their “Mancave’s of goods tucked away in warehouses”. Why doesn’t everyone see a problem here? Why are most Liberals ok with the IRS targeting Conservative groups??? I would NOT be ok with the IRS or any other agnecy targeting Liberals even tho I think their point of view is whacked!! Why are we OK with this Administration collecting phone records from every single Verizon customer? WHY ARE WE OK WITH ALL THE CORRUPTION FROM OUR GOVERNMENT AND THESE PROGRAMS???

The scary thing is if the police (IRS, EPA, DOJ, Homeland Security, and the NSA) are involved in fraudulent and corrupt practices, who polices them?

Why is society OK with people taking anything they want from anyone they want?

Why SHOULDN’T we be pissed to see someone buying skittles, soda, or whatever they can with what is supposed to be used to keep someone from starving?

I don’t get it, maybe that’s the “Wing-nut” in me. Geez.

It’s because this society has become OK with handouts. Obama is promising to give everyone the world. People want free TV’s and free money…and “free healthcare”. The problem is these people aren’t smart enough to realize that someone’s gotta pay for it. And they don’t care as long as it isn’t them.

They have no pride or self-esteem. I’m describing the droves of people that voted for Obama the master of free everything. Take from those that worked for what they have and give it to those that don’t care too work to be the best and have the best. That seems to be the Liberal principle.

I have no problem helping those in need. Some white trash pork queen with dirty clothes and day glo flip flops carting around 4 kids that don’t look alike walking next to a brother with his pants hangin off his ass and gold rings/necklaces and a smart phone does not in my book constitute someone in NEED.

But we have plenty of that don’t we? You’ve all seen them. Does it piss me off? Damn straight it does.

This country will never change until it hits rock bottom. Guess what…that’s coming. We can’t sustain this forever. But as long as we’re living fat still…who cares right?

@My Voice-Nice post-It sounds like you have been to Walmart.

My Voice & LVS: Time to get a room.

@opinionated-why are you available, Bitch.

Sorry, I’m straight.

@ Just My Opinion….it’s been long past time for you to get a fukn clue but hey, I don’t expect much from you.

ALTHOUGH!!!! I will show how I am obviously the better man here and give credit where credit is due….I thought your June 6, 2013 at 6:32 pm here in the Winer’s Den was right on. I commend you on making an intelligent comment…Keep up the good work. BUT try to apply the same logic to your King. That’ll be the challange huh!

You watch how people pay for there food and whats in there cart? sounds like someone needs to mind there business. if they waste there ebt on candy and they cant get real food for rest of month who cares?

We ARE minding our own business. Those are the type of people who have to steal from us to feed themselves for the rest of the month, goofball!

There’s nothing wrong with them getting at treat for their kids with their cards. But there is something wrong when their whole cart is candy and pop. Those are not what the cards are intended for. These are mine and your tax dollars being abused. My family gives to the food bank a couple times a year, and we always include a cake mix, or brownie mix, or something sweet. That’s my choice to donate those treats. It’s not my choice that these people are abusing the system.

Also, their kids are the ones who are getting the free lunches in school, another thing that some of have to pay for. I’m sure these people that I saw the other day will also be getting the free lunch program over the summer too.

See that is the problem. They say mind your own business and it is our business. Like I said, I don’t have a problem helping people out that really need it but there are always people who will try to take advantage of the system. We give these people food stamps and the waste it on junk food and then we have to pay to feed their kids at school. If they are on food stamps they shouldn’t be eligible for the free lunch programs. They are already getting free meals.

Why would the County Supervisors have a almost $9,000 bill at the Isle Casino?

Do you mean Cerro Gordo Supervisors and which ones?

I saw it in Mondays Globe. It was listed along with other expenses.

Matt-Did you see this?? Is there a story here??

@Matt-thank you. It seems like a lot of money but I guess that is what things cost these days.

$9,000 for lodging? Wow. How many participants?

What do you care JMO? Your Liberal buddies at the IRS just spent 50 million over the course of three years on employee conferences. What is our current deficit?

The report, released by the Treasury inspector general for tax administration, shows the IRS hosted 225 employee conferences from 2010 through 2012 at a total cost of $49 million.

The watchdog report detailed a 2010 IRS conference in Anaheim for close to 2,600 employees that cost $4 million and used funds from the Tax Collectors Enforcement budget to cover part of the tab. At that conference — which included luxury rooms and free drinks –132 IRS officials received room upgrades.

Oh…wait. It’s OK because it was on Obama’s watch and not Bush’s right???? Right…….

They usually chalk it up to entertaining guests for state events. Probably getaway with going to the strip club if that was still here.

My 11-year-old found a cell phone today in a parking lot. After we got a hold of the guy who’s phone it was he stopped by our house to pick up his phone and offered my 11-year-old a $20 reward for finding the phone. She told him no thanks for the reward money because you should not get paid for doing the right thing. She said she was just trying to get the phone back to the rightful owner. Very proud of her!

I’m proud of her, too! Thanks for sharing.

Tell her I am proud of her too!!!!

Is there a tactic involved with the Behm trial taking so long to go to trial?

Now that the holiday and farm planting is done the gas prices are going back down. NEVER SAW THAT COMING. some people give a long line of bullshit propaganda from the oil companies about why prices go up. nobody is that stupid.
OH WAIT…. I have a vision. gas prices will go up again the later part of june and drop again middle of july. reason? cannot be determined at this time. cleaning, weather damage, low reserves, come to my mind. Im not actually in the oil business but if I can predict it, then youd think the people in charge should.

@50 miles-Isn’t it amazing that only two weeks ago we had such low inventory’s and the refinery’s were shut down for repair and that was what was driving the high prices. Now, here we are one week later and our inventory’s are full and prices are coming back down, right up until the next fabricated reason to raise them for the 4th of July. What a bunch of suckers the American public is.

What’s the deal with the Behm family in Mason City and their car fraud lawsuit?

You would think if they were innocent they would want to clear their names instead of delaying the trial!

The accuser may not have “evidence” or it would have been produced by now??

Skarliz might not have enough proof

arrest first. get information later

@ 50 miles – Isn’t that the motto of all law enforcement agencies???

that all depends on your last name

Full day without Cell service without US Cell today, not very productive for those of us that work at home.

@candy-fiber optic cables cut by construction crew in Floyd County knocked out mediacom and your cell phones.

Hopefully we will get a credit on our bill!!!!

Thanks Robin, Eric, and the rest of our civic leaders, you guys do a great(though thankless) job! And remember, haters gonna hate!

Was that meant as a joke? Good one!!

It is a shame you cannot discern between what is hate, and what is a desire for proper governance, and the ability of citizens to address their elected officials. Elected officials are accountable to the people, whilst un-elected officials are accountable to no one but themselves, and not act as if they have authority.

Just a word about the NIACC baseball team. Its been alot of fun following them this year, and now with a big run in the world series its been even more of a joy to follow. This team has alot of former Newman and Mowhawk players on it and they are getting it done in Okalahoma! Congratulations NIACC and keep up the great work I for one will be watching.

Those dice are just an eye-sore. They really do need to be put somewhere else. Having them that close to the veterans monumnets (Civil War Stature, Veterans of Mason City Monument) is a distraction of what I have always thought Central Park was all about. It’s in the central of town and houses the monuments that reflect our appreciation for our military veterans, living and dead. Do you think any of them would be appreciative of these ugly things being so close to where their family members can come and reflect? Could you imagine the outrage if these dice, or anything like them, were to be placed anywhere near the Vietnam Wall, the Washington Monumnet, the Lincoln Statue, or anywhere in Washinton DC? Then it would be demeed a waste of tax-payer money and would be shut down in a matter of minutes. It just doesn’t sit well with me and it won’t. I hope that someone, somewhere, be it a veteran, a family member, or an out-of-towner says something, does something, to try and save the dignity of those monuments. And to all those Vietnam Vets out there, I want to apologize for these idiots. There showing you no more respect than that of which you came home to. I truely am sorry and I WILL try to ammend this for you. I appreciate all you have done and will continue to do to keep America what it is. A land of the free because of the brave.

I will also be out and about with a paper copy to sign, all the time. ( I work at Ace Hardware in Mason City

I will be more than happy to stop into Ace Hardware and sign your petition.

I will be down later today or tomorrow to sign. Thank you very much for taking the time to start this, out of respect towards those from this community who were lost in the service to our country.

I don’t work again until Friday but will be taking one down there tomorrow afternoon to leave for signatures. I hope to be able to present it to the City Council at the June 18th meeting.Thank you all!

Things came up with the family. The paper petition won’t be avaiable until Friday, when I have to work. Sorry for that. Need to take care of my sick son.

Not a problem, Family comes first, we will catch up later.

If anyone is interested in signing the paperpetition, I will be at work all weekend.

Published May 24th, 2013, in “My Turn” written by Nancy Lund:

“I can’t believe that people object to the Yahtzee dice in Central Park. There is no casino in Mason City, so if the sight of giant red dice brings on a gambling frenzy in an innocent passerby, they’re just going to have to hop to Highway 65 and head up to Northwood”

I can see the negative impact assicoiated with the dice in reference to those addicted to gambling, but the majority of us have more of a problem with the placement being so close to veteran monuments and the saddening event of distroying the flower bed where the dice now sit. I understand that this may not affect her personally, though I find it hard that her family has no one that has served or is serving in it.
These are the people that we need to send a message to. The ones that have no thought past their own being and have no problem destroying what is important to other people and idily stand by as the CITY does so.

It’s funny how many right wing nut jobs parrot what they hear on radio and TV. When they were calling Obama a Marxist and then a Communist, I would ask they what the difference was and not one of them could tell me! Why? Because all they were doing is parroting what some other nut case said without even thinking about it. It just sounded good to them. Mental midgets were easily duped by the GOP and turned into parakeets.

HUH?! Well I don’t remember asking for a cracker but you definitely are a SHEEP.

Obama is a liar and always has been. I hope it all catches up to him as it looks like it is and he is impeached for his lies. Watch…it’s all starting to unravel for him. Now, where’s my popcorn???

Corn jumps again, when it hits $6 a bushel, sell. It’s going to be a great year once we get the crops in and get going.

OK, the weatherman was off by a whopping 16 degrees today. How wrong is he going to be tomorrow. 75 degrees?! Ya, we’ll see…

Brrr…it’s cold.

If you don’t want sleazy carny prizes and sleazy broken down rides don’t go to the carnival because that’s what it’s always been about.

Really, crying because of a shot glass prize?

You need to stay home and read the Bible if that’s how thin your skin is. These are white trash events who employ white trash to work with them, traveling felons on the run from the law in many cases.

In my day we one roach clips, rolling trays and bongs. Things we could really use.

I agree totally. stay home. Or take the kids out and spend time with them at a safe kid friendly place.

It should be, that community events such as Band Festival would be family friendly. Leave the boozing to events that only adults attend.

Or should parenting follow the “do as I say, not as I do” methodology? History shows that fails every time it is tried.

Read the bible? And you are the one calling people white trash? Kids, especially teenagers are going to go to the carnival when it’s in town. That’s pretty much a fact. I’ve lived in Mason City my whole life and always went to Band Fest and yes when I was a teenager I went to the carnival. And usually if those so called white trash people are there with their children, and are playing the games, they are playing them to win prizes for their children. And sorry, but shot glasses and budweiser bottle openers are not appropriate items for the kids.

I do not need to refer to the Bible in order to know what is appropriate for children, and what is not. These carnies are not the arbiters of our community’s standards.

And by all reasonable standards in most communities I have lived in, your writing show you are hardly an example of the standards this community needs to raise it’s children to be upstanding, successful citizens.

@observer, my response about the bible was for ironic.

Gotcha, I was hoping that was the case. Comment was directed at ‘Ironic’.

It would have been nice to see some of our city council people at the VFW today in honor of all the Vets that have served.

That would take en effort on their part. Thats not going to happen. Besides, with the placement of those ugly dice, we see what the City Council thinks of our vets.

ATTENTION !!!! be aware of anyone selling cell phones cheap the IOWA CELL PHONE AND REPAIR on 4th st backside of willow brook was broke into and robe the other night thief got bunch cell phone not sure how many but just be carful on purchase of any cell phones.

Hey maybe and 50 miles south-the second lawn was mowed today in the rain. That makes the Grupp rental yesterday and the Dodge rental today. It looks like people do read this column. Thank you Judge Grupp and Matt Dodge for taking care of that. It sure helps us try to keep our neighborhood looking decent.

I guess the bad publicity thru NIT is the way to go.

LVS-There is no reason to thank Matt Dodge-He doesn’t even own the property you are referring to. The Cerro Gordo County website will always give you the CORRECT information about this if you need it.

Well thank you. If you know all the facts why don’t you post it?

@just the facts-As a follow up I can tell you that the renters that rented the property on 14th N.W. lived in that house for 10 years before being evicted last year and they told me that Matt Dodge was their landlord. Now maybe he just managed it for someone else but that is what I was told. Or maybe he has sold it since last summer as the house has red tags all over it.

Is Robin Anderson responsible for all evil?

No…not all. Most comes from Obama.

My 15 year old daughter also won a shot glass. And I think it’s time to contract a new carnival. On Friday night the power went out and they had a hard time getting their generator started to get people off the zipper and were manually pulling it to get the people off. Smoke barreling out of the generator, didn’t seem too safe to me. Then a friend of mine took his kids there on Sunday and the kiddie dragon ride came off the track. I know this much, my kid will not be going any where near those rides next year if it’s the same carnival!

The last thing i would ever do is defend Robin Anderson. But, the carnival also gives out posters of scantily clad men and women. Perhaps it was the child that chose the prize and part of the blame lies with them. I don’t think we should expect the carnies to choose what prizes our kids pick. That lies on the shoulders of us as parents. I can gaurantee that my 15 year old son would not have picked a shot glass or accepted one as a prize. And if he did then I as the parent would explain to him why it was not appropriate.

Another thing…why was the evening entertainment starting so early? The bands started at 6! Most people on Friday nights aren’t even getting home from work until 6. Yes I think it’s long overdue to have someone other than Robin Anderson coordinate this event!

Matt, with all due respect…i believe you are making something out of nothing on this one. BELIEVE ME, I support everything you do to the cultural elite to expose their corruption. However, this carnival is no different in respect of the prizes as is the one that comes to Clear Lake on the 4th. Their prizes are and should be geared to all ages, not just children. That being said, the carnie should not have allowed a young teenager to choose such a prize. Now, you can say that OR you can look at it as it should be….WHERE ARE THE PARENTS? WHERE IS THEIR RESPONSIBILITY IN THIS? I have two kids one 12 and one 14. I can tell you this, neither of them would have chosen a shot glass for a prize. WHY? Because they already have been taught that it is age inappropriate. The responsibility lies with the PARENT. NOT the Carnie NOR Robin Anderson on this one. Sorry Matt, I can’t stand Robin Anderson but you are placing blame where the responsibility lies with Mom and Dad (damn that hurt defending her). Just sayin, we need to own what is ours and stop blaming everyone else for our lack of guidance and responsibility. Your kids will always be faced with things that are inappropriate, it’s YOUR job to teach them right from wrong so they make good choice when faced with the opportunity of inappropriatness.

Sorry if that’s hard for Mohawk Mom or you to accept. Had Mohawk mom done more to get her child to understand what is appropriate and what isn’t, she wouldn’t be in the situation of being upset. Her kid would have made a better choice. Don’t know how you or anyone else can over look that fact.

Now, if there was no other prize choice…then that is a problem. A child shouldn’t be GIVEN an inappropriate age prize and THAT is a bad choice of the carnie. Was that the ONLY choice???

My daughter is 15 and she got a shot glass and also a bottle opener that said Budweiser on it. The game was the one where they put tokens in and it slides and the prizes drop out. There was no choice in prizes, these are the inappropriate prizes they had in the machine.

If that’s how it went down then I stand corrected. Still, you will find the exact same thing at the 4th over at the Lake. So what do you do, ban adult type prizes from a carnival. Those prizes are the same at every carnival. Ever check out fair time? Not our fair of course. Maybe the right answer is to just not have a carnival at all in the first place. Didn’t a bunch of Carnie’s get busted bringing drugs into town a few years ago. I say the hell with the carnival all together. No more problems in the future of any kind around our youth. Robin can leave too and now everyone will be happy.

I hope everyone has a safe and happy memorial day weekend.

I wonder why nothing was said about the gun shots by brick furniture last tue or wed. It was during the middle of the day. MAybe nothing was said because of band festival?

Maybe someone was shooting at the ugly statues!

I guess I’ll be the 1st to say Thank You, you too!

My husband and I are looking for a home to rent in the Mason City, Clear Lake maybe even Ventura area. A Garage is very important. If any of you know of something even rural area please let us know. 641-530-0255 We appreciate the help Thank You.

@roxie-try Tim Latham at Hildebrand Real Estate. 641-423-5055. He has a lot of houses for rent and is honest and takes care of his property.

LVS
Thank You, those are the features we are looking for.

@badpontiac-they don’t care that you can’t get it. They are trying to force people to take their shitty 3.2 with no programming. They are in such bad shape they don’t even bother to give you the afternoon news on Sunday. We have to watch the Minnesota channels to see what happened in Mason City over the weekend and even what the weather will be on Monday. It is all about them saving a buck and then they wonder why people talk about them.

Kimt please put Band Fest back on regular 3. The many people with direct tv of dish can’t get it.

Had a great time at bandfest today. We r lucky to have a town celibration as nice bandfest. The bands were all great but the real talent was the active kids gymnastics.

A police officer in Texas was charged with animal cruelty after shooting his neighbor’s cat with a crossbow.
http://houston.cbslocal.com/2013/05/24/police-officer-accused-of-shooting-arrow-into-neighbors-cat/

There are tow rent houses up here in the Northwest part of town. One is owned and rented by Dodge and the other by Judge Grupp. Neither has bothered to mow the grass this summer and the weeds are now knee high. These people rent and make a profit off these rentals and have an obligation to keep the lawn mowed and the houses in decent repair. Neither one bother to shovel the walks lat winter either. If those houses were in their neighborhood they would have the mayor and all of the city council out there raising hell over it. Everyone want to complain about the Northend and then we have these rich slumlords trashing it out.

Isn’t it usually the renter’s responsibility to take care of walks and lawns? And isn’t there some City web site where you can take pictures of problems in MC and submit them online instead of complaining here? Go through the proper channels to report this problem. If the renters don’t take care of it, the City will likely make the owners do it or charge their tax bills for doing it for them.

@Katie-Yes, when there are renters living there they are supposed to take care of mowing the lawn. However, under the new ordinance it is the landlords responsibilty to make sure they do it and if they don’t then it is up to the landlords. In this case the houses have been empty for some months (all last winter) and that makes it solely the landlords responsibility. They own the houses so it is up to them to keep them up.

@Katie-Funny thing happened. About 3 hours after I posted this on here someone showed up at the Grupp house and mowed the lawn. Some people think it does no good to post here on Rants and Raves but a lot of people read this and sometimes you get things done and the people who make smart comments about it like Dave look pretty STUPID.

it doesn’t do any good complaining on here about it. As the old saying goes…got A dime? Call somebody who cares!!!

LVS, it is sometimes hard to follow you when you type things like, “There are tow rent houses up here in the Northwest part of town.” The T is not close to the L on my keyboard, not sure about yours.

Katie is right, the city has a service called see click fix and they will take care of any future problems. The program works very well.

“There are tow rent houses up here in the Northwest part of town. One is owned and rented by Dodge and the other by Judge Grupp.”

I read it as a mistype of”two”as indicated by the second sentence.

Ah, that would make more sense, I get it now Joao DoCarmo, thanks for pointing that out.

@John-I meant TWO. It was a typo-is that close on your keyboard. I know they have click and fix but I am old fashioned and don’t have one of those new phones that are on the internet. Don’t have any use for them.

John : you are wrong. even Katie doesnt know. “And isn’t there some City web site” Myself and others still dont know of this web site you are talking about. But I DO know of NIT, and read it most every day. People cant use the proper site if they don’t know about it. can they ? so in effect the city or whoever runs the site has failed to inform people of it. (proof because we are talking about it here) this is just as I see it. and as for anyone complaining about posting it here. that’s what this section of NIT is all about. maybe more of this kind of thing should be posted here to embarrass landlords, property owners, or wrong doers.
Question for John or anyone. which site gets more views each day? the city site or NIT? anyway of getting those figures Matt?

@50 Miles South- You are correct in that is what this site and this column is all about. That is why they call it Rants and Raves. Thanks for your comments.

I think I’ve only been to the city’s page once and that was months ago. I found it by accident.

LVS snd 50 Miles South, Here is the link to the web site. http://seeclickfix.com/mason-city

thank you John. But like I said. The right people need to know the site when it matters.

@John-I have used the site occasionally by e-mailing Pat Otto. Sometimes you get a response but most of the time you don’t. I sent her several e-mail last year about the sidewalks not being shoveled and received no response and was ignored. last year I contacted her several times about the Dodge house with no response. One time I paid a kid to mow the grass myself just so the neighborhood wouldn’t look trashy. and I don’t own a digital camera or smart phone so I have trouble getting pictures to them. I still think you are missing the point of this particular portion of N.I.T. It is called Rants and Raves for just this reason.

I see Doesha Rae Foster is in jail for failure to appear for DRIVING WHILE LICENSE DENIED-SUSP-CANCELLED. Way to go CHAMP! Glad you are FED UP with all the crime and wrong doings around here!! LMAO. @ all those that defended her on here all the time…you win too! People change right!?

CLASSIC!!

#1 Leaded gasoline. Lead (“ethyl”) was added to gasoline to increase it’s octane, and eliminate knock. Lead was not, and is not a natural component of gasoline. Because the law was changed banning the addition of lead to gasoline, a reformulation and replacement additive was required.

#2 On the average, a barrel of crude will produce 10 gallons of diesel oil. Included in it’s production is the recent need to remove sulfur from it, adding cost. Diesel oil comes from the same fraction as other heavy distillates. Another heavy distillate is fuel oil. When demand for fuel oil for heating is up in the winter, refiners will reduce the amount of diesel oil produced.

Diesel trucks are a minute portion of the market for diesel oil. The U.S. Navy and railroads are the top consumers. In fact, Union Pacific Railroad is the #2 consumer (1.3 billion gallons annually), behind the Navy in terms of consumption.

#3 Supply and demand. Every year, the refiners have to change gasoline production for the upcoming season. Reformulated gasoline or RFG (a gasoline that is less prone to evaporation) is produced for the summer season, and stocks of conventional gas must be cleared out in order to meet regional requirements for RFG by summer.

If there ends up being a large supply of conventional gasoline in the spring, a pipeline company or jobber will price it to deplete it’s stocks and make way for RFG.

You keep poking at Oil Companies as if they directly price gasoline. They have some influence, however as I stated before, there are middlemen, transportation, and retailers involved. Like it or not, they get their markup before it is put in the tank of your local station. Then there is Futures traders at CME who put more pressure on the price of fuel than Oil Companies.

With all those hands in the pie, it is quite difficult to make a case for rigging of prices.

Observer – perhaps it is not germaine to your list: Federal EPA is currently levying fines against the gasoline refineries for not blending cellulosic ethanol – an ethanol made from corn stalks, switch grass, wheat stubble.

The refineries problem? NO ONE in the world, at this time, produces cellulosic ethanol!

No one knows how American vehicles will react using cellulosic ethanol.

Oh, however, we can rest easy with the knowledge the all-knowing EPA is protecting us/US.

2008 the US produced 3+ million gallons of cellulosic ethanol. With another 21 million gallons of production planed to be built/operational. With a 20 million gallon per year plant planned for Michigan.

Is their some kind of ordinance for how or where you can run sump pump drainage in Mason City?

@badpontiac-yes, there is a ordinance that was published a couple of years ago. I think it said that it is illegal to run the sump pumps into the storm sewers. That means the people that are draining into the streets are in violation of the ordinance. I think that is how it read. I could be wrong and I am sure if I am someone will point it out.

Are you sure its the storm sewer or the regular municipal sewer system. lets say you run the drain to the curb and let it run on the grass. with a storm sewer inlet a foot or two away. whats the difference. sounds like your screwed either way.

@50 miles-I said I could be wrong and I guess I might have been. I knew there was a ordinance, just couldn’t remember what it said exactly. At least you were polite about it, not like the A-H### who posted under wrong again.

LVS is wrong once again. You can drain them into the storm sewer system but not into your waste system. Another example of someone not checking the facts before he opens his big mouth.

@wrong again-thanks jerk. Who read it to you??

@wrong again-you know I will bet that you are that Anonymous creep that likes to TROLL around and snipes at people like the coward you are. At least you are still below and behind me just where it was intended that crap like you should be.

Why isn’t anyone other than me outraged that Joey got fired at Northern Lights? I have heard talks about why they let her go, the story in the Globe did her no favors and showed her no respect about something she started and without her, will have a hard time surviving as they know it today. We need some answers right away on this, if what I heard was right, this was handled in a very wrong way.

Who is Joey, what is Northern Lights, and what is the purported reason that she was fired?

Correct Karen and there was no reason listed and I will not share with you what I have heard, you can read into it what you want from her statement with the story that ran in the Globe. She is very dignified and states the truth, she has more class than the Globe does. This needs an investigation.

I have known Joey for a number of years. She’s an amazing person and truly put her heart and sole into those shelters. And truly cares about the people that the shelters have served. I would like to know the truth as to what happened. Another question? Aren’t the shelters somehow tied to Mercy?

The shelters are tied to Mercy. I can tell you that Joey threw her whole life into these projects.

Matt, can you please investigate? The Globe will not I am sure.

The rules of both shelters are clear and stated up front. That is all I am going to say for now. There will be more to come out of this story I am sure once it gets looked into.

I posted this comment above, didn’t realize I was not logged in.

I do not know Joey…
I have the ultimate respect for Northern Lights and their mission – God-bless them all!

One thing an employer (or former employer) can not ever do, is release to ANYONE employment information, including reasons for termination. An employer is only allowed by law to confirm dates of employment and job responsibility. Some push the limits even by answering the question “Would you hire this person again?”

However, an employee (or former employee) is able to comment on their status all they want (within the limitations of libel and slander. So no matter what, short of a lawsuit where facts become public testimony, no official from the employer can make any comment.

Sucks, but that’s the law.

“……2nd the US exports more gas in a day than we use, look it up we have very bad people running our country…..”

I did look it up:

47 million barrels/day produced in the U.S.
485 thousand barrels/day exported.

Source U.S. Department of Energy, Energy Information Agency reports.

If you were producing a product, and found a market for it outside of the U.S., would you ignore it?

If you were a marketer of products, and found a cheaper source of it, would you ignore that and continue to go with the higher priced source?

Be realistic.

I believe the reason we export so much gasoline is because many countries do not have the refineries to produce gasoline. Even some oil producing countries do not have the ability or perhaps the capacity to refine oil into gasoline.

Those are some of the reasons MC, but price could also be a deciding factor.

I noted in looking at the DOE’s export reports that historically there are few countries we export to on a regular basis, such as Canada and Mexico. Others were one-time purchases such as the Netherlands/Netherlands Antilles (Bonaire). Even Venezuela was on the list for a spot purchase.

Newspapers in the regions where facilities are down verified what was said in my comments. The Department of Energy, Energy Information Agency validated the production data and facility capacities.

What you see in pump prices depend upon a lot of variables, not just the unfounded ‘greedy oil companies”. When product leaves the refinery, it is sold to pipeline companies, who carry it to different markets or storage sites. From there, it is again sold, perhaps twice before you put cash on the retail counter. And everyone get’s their costs and markups. That is what pays for the infrastructure and it’s upkeep.

The constant flux of supply and demand affect futures prices of the product, adding the kind of volatility you see now when several facilities close.

Last, have you ever tried to site a new refinery? Think about all the obstacles, local restrictions, and costs involved. People here refused the proposed CES plant, imagine if Valero tried to build a refinery here?

Just fact, not conspiracy theory.

Ill bite… you have the facts. lets here your answer to this. why did the oil companies(any of the many different forms)say back in the 70s and before, that leaded gas was higher priced because they had to add the lead. while now the unleaded is higher because they have to remove the lead in the fuel?
#2 Also are you familiar with diesel fuel? It is far less refined than gasoline. So why is it higher than gasoline if its cheaper to produce????? Remember when it was much cheaper than gasoline back in the early 80s and before. since the 80s there are many more diesel vehicles and many more semi trucks than railroad traffic. Wonder if that has anything to do with it????
#3 ever wonder why gas prices rise during the holidays, spring and fall harvest, and in the case of a recent RV convention in Forest City Iowa? because thats when people need it the most. There is a law which basicly reads that it is illegal to raise prices in times of need. (price rigging) why do the oil companies get away with it? Because the president does not investigate it.
Yes a profit is in the best interest for any business. But the fact that some of the highest profitable businesses in the past years have been oil companies, is one thing has hurt the rest of America. Not a conspiracy, but rigging price at times Americans need it the most.

One reason for the cheaper price of super-unleaded (in Iowa) is a fuel tax cut. According to http://www.ethanolrfa.org/pages/tax-incentives – there is a nickel federal tax advantage on alcohol fuel vs non-ethanol fuel. I believe there is a Iowa tax credit on ethanol-blended fuels as well.

As a trucker and farmer, I notice the price differences. In Minnesota, the price is equal, or sometimes slightly higher.

not sure how long you have been driving but diesel was much cheaper before 1980. remember, since diesel is not refined as much why is it NOW higher than regular or unleaded fuel. ethanol wasnt a factor back in the 80s when the priced went up. and the price difference is more than the 5 cents per gal tax break. (recent pricing is anyones guess). Observer stated something about having to remove sulfur. where did the sulfur come from? If its in the crude oil then it also has to be removed from leaded or unleaded fuel as well. so cost should be the same for both and not a factor.

Matt, are you going to run for Mayor or not?

We’ve noticed the food and service at the Cancun Mexican restaurant in MC has really gone down hill in the last year or two. Not sure what’s going on there, but I have mentioned our disappointment (very politely) to the manager and servers on three different occasions. Nothing changes. Some servers seem like they are in bad moods, service can be very slow even when they are not real busy and the food quality has really changed. We usually leave a $5 tip even after we have had bad service in hopes that things would improve, but no such luck so far. Looks like its time to find some place else to dine.

Plaza Mexico, man. C’mon, man.

I second that notion…plaza mexico is where its at

The service at Plaza Mexico — or Mc Mexican as I call it — is super fast. And, I think most of them are legal too.

1st when g bush left office gas was 1.92 or so a gallon 2nd the US exports more gas in a day than we use, look it up we have very bad people running our country @ thats a fact.

It may of been 1.92 when left office but summer of 2008
it was at$4.00 or above, short memory.Nice try!

If you are saying it was 1.92 when he left office but went up to 4.00, that would be when Obama was in office right?

no…… he said that a few months before bush left, gas was $4.00 plus. check the link for yourself and check out 5 years ago. proof. because gas can vary this much is proof the oil companies are rigging the prices.
http://www.iowastategasprices.com/Retail_Price_Chart.aspx

I believe you, it’s just the way he worded it didn’t sound right.

Filled up my truck this morning with gas. 101.33 at 4.04 per gallon. Gas prices have risen about 50 cents per gallon in the last 10 days. Where is our government?…why are the oil companys doing this to us? I feel it speaks to the dishonesty of that particular American industry.

Government doesn’t price gasoline. Thank the free market for that.

the oil companies have been able ever since george bush (oil president)refused to threaten the oil companies with investigations of price rigging. thats it plain and simple. if the prez would threaten that, then the prices would come down by themselves. Bill Clinton did it and it worked. thats the ONE thing I dont like about the current prez.

“…..the oil companies have been able ever since george bush (oil president)…………..”

There is no logic to that since in looking at current prices across the nation, you see that Mid-Western states are higher than the usual leaders. Minnesota is higher than California by 23 cents. New York, Jersey, Penna, D.C., and Connecticut usually top out the list.

Believe what conspiracies you will, credibility is on the side of fact.

check out this link for gas prices and check out the 11 years ago link (the oldest one available). you will see that gas prices were cheapest while Bill Clinton was in office and went up during bush (from an oil state and also had investments in the oil business). proof that the problem really started with the worst president ever in my time, george bush. also you cant tell me that the oil buisness is so fu*ked up that the price of gas (needs) to go up because they are cleaning a refinery. this country is in deep shit if the oil refineries are teatering on that fine of a line as they want you to believe. I do blame Obahma for not investigating gas prices, as I did for bush. If the prez would threaten to release oil reserves everytime a price hike came about the prices would stabilize.

Two refineries are down for repairs, specifically Joliet, IL; and Whitting, IN. It is expected that once completed, Whitting will increase it’s heavy crude capacity by 259,000 barrels/day. The current combined capacities are 640,000 barrels/day

Tight supplies of summer blended fuel in other markets put further pressure on stocks in the Mid-West.

you are getting your information from oil company propaganda. You cannot believe everything they are saying. they may not be lying to us, but they are also NOT telling us the whole truth. simply read the two news outlets in mason city and you will understand what Im saying. neither maybe lying, but the stories can say something totally different. If this sounds elementary to you, and you still cant understand what Im trying to say about the oil companies, then you have a problem. sorry

Maybe, y’all should purchase some ethanol, you do know its produced RIGHT here in Mason City, on 43rd ST. and uses North Iowa grown corn, maybe you should push to have your gas stations to get E15 if your car is not capable of flex-fuel, or the simple E10 helps out in price usually a dime, but if your truck cost $100.00 to fill at $4 a gallon you would of saved $2.50, doesnt seem like a whole lot but in the scope of things, any penny matters, also, Go to wal-mart buy a Wal-mart gift card and use it to pay at the pump at Murphys you get an extra discount, sometimes its up to 15 cents sometimes its only 3 cents, but every penny helps, Hy-Vee has the fuel savers club, my wife got almost 20 cents off the gallon the other day, all these things add up, if any one else has ideas or knows of places that have discounts or rewards programs please post them so others are aware, thanks,

Jeremy: dont mean to sound like a snob, but I already know about and use your suggestions. My van took two tanks full this weekend at about $106 per tankful. because many people have to drive these days for work it really cuts into the bottom line, and peoples “play money”

@common sense man-they want $4.00 gas to force you to buy one of the electric cars for 60K that lets you go 100 miles on a charge. It is all part of their plan to get you to do something you don’t want to do.

You are so smart and I just love reading your thousands of comments. You seem to know so much about everything. Please keep posting, thanks!!!!

What ever happend with the former employee suing Pritchard? You never see ads for them anymore are they going out of business?

Feds come in to handle the Harris case, to go by the book, no screw ups,an federal Prison is harder
to do then State Prisons!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!He gets a boy friend quicker!!!!

Where dd you get the idea the feds are involved? The state attorney general office is assisting like they do with any murder trial. But no federal attorneys are involved.

The Attorney General’s Office does not help with all murder trials. They are to assist with some cases when requested by a county attorney. There time would be better spent in counties with a part-time county attorney or with one or two. Seems a waste of resource to help in a county with several experience prosecutors and a couple of new attorneys with big egos.

Was at Arbys drive thru in CL tonight and there was an older gentleman standing at drive thru. He walked by my car and told me to check my receipt as he must have been overcharged and had a dollar and some loose change in his hand. He then saw my preschool age daughters in the back seat and told me how cute they were. He walked away and then came back and gave the $1 to my daughters and told them to keep it. They were so excited and thanked him. It made our day!

Wow, I’d love to able to do something like that, but in this day in age you’d prolly be charged with a sex crime or attacked by the father or something else very bad may happen. It’s sad, but can’t touch it with a 20 foot pole.

Move to Colorado and use it where it is legal. Your comments here are getting old.

Don’t want new medical news, don’t read it John. No one is forcing you to read my comments and you can take that to the bank.

you can post all you want about how GOOD pot is, it just doesn’t matter because pot is ILLEGAL. Cry all you want, nobody cares except for the police.

Now the truth comes out. You just don’t want to hear it. Por is legal for a majority of the population and when it’s legal here, you better run like hell!

Not sure where you get the idea that por (pot) is legal for the majority of the people unless you are talking just Colorado or Washington. If it is legal here then so be it, I am not going to run away. All I am saying is that in the rest of the 48 states it is illegal.

maybe you are wrong. Pot is legal for medical reasons in 12 other states and is legal in Wash. and Col. That is 14 states that have some form of legal pot laws.

If I remember right for medical Marijuana you have to have a card. Not everybody can get one. There are only 2 states where Marijuana is really legal, where you can buy it on the street and smoke it in public.

Can someone please explain to me why our County Attorney’s office needs to bring in the Attorney General’s office to prosecute cases? The Harris murder trial is going on today and they had to bring an AG here to prosecute it while our own County Attorney “assists” him. The guy confessed to killing the girl, what is so tough about this case? Our County Attorney gets paid to do this and has been an attorney for 20 years!! What exactly does he do then to justify his $100K a year salary?

@Reality-I think the way it works is when the Feds come in and decide to make it a Federal case they then bring in their own prosecuter. Lot bigger penalty’s under the Feds.

@LVS, good point. But what troubles me is that they kept this as a state charge and brought in the AG who is a state prosecutor, not federal. Also, our County Attorney sits with the AG all week in trial and doesn’t do anything. What a waste of time and money.

@Reality-Good Question. OK, that is a different deal then. I don’t know why they would bring in someone else on a local trial.

They cannot make it a “fed” case as no violation of federal law is charged. It is a state case.

The Attorney General comes in To assist cause it takes a tremendous amount of time to prepare and try a murder, Confession or not. The defense also has two attorneys In this case. Most county attorney’s don’t have a lot of experience in murder trials but the Attorney Generals office does.

@Reality Check, Maybe YOU should become a lawyer! You make it sound like pretty easy money!

@Realist, first, our County Attorney has 20 years experience as a prosecutor. I realize they call it “practicing” law, but one would think he could do this case on his own by now. Second, I’m certain “handling a jury trial” was in the job description when he interviewed for this $100K job. I’m assuming from your limited response that you just want to ass nothing to the conversation. I have wasted enough time on responding to you.

The County Attorney is elected which means no interview.

It may be a simple answer – such as that the county attorney may have some tie (distant and long past or present and close) that might raise questions if the individual gets off.

It could be a previous representation of Harris, or that his family rents from the County Attorney (if the CA has rentals)…

In today’s day and age, sometimes they have to be super-sensitive to anything that may point to impropriety in office.

7 attorneys and a 30 hour work week — it doesn’t get any better than that.

would love to use the coupons for the Rose Bowl that are on this site, but they expired 4-30-13???

I have never seen nothing better than Matt’s Editorial today just up, on Jay Urdahl. It scrapes the bark off Urdahl it don’t leave nothing out.

Quite recently, researchers at Queen Mary University have shown that noise pollution runs counter to healthy living.

In the UK, the most recent trend is to eliminate noise sources, from appliances to motorized vehicles.

Yet in Mason City, the leadership, despite it’s claim of healthy living through Blue Zones, invests our tax dollars in increased environmental noise and pollution. We pay firms to pollute our community, despite state laws to the contrary, and ignore enforcement.

Ask yourself again, who would invest in a community, and with it, bring jobs when we head down that sort of anti-social path?

In Mason City, the desires of the few, burdens the common good of the many!
