Mason City retards. It’s so sickening. I look at people I knew like Dr. Dave Long who moved on to be appointed secretary of education by Governor Schwarzenegger and others who moved out of state and I’m reminded how different Mason City used to be. Now I can see from the average postings on these forums how far Mason City has fallen. It’s been a total and complete brain drain over the last 30 years.

I know. I got stuck here. I made some bad investments into this area and now I’m regretting them. I should have laid low, stopped all outpourings and left when I had the chance. I’ll get another chance soon enough, and I think I’m going to take it. It’s sad though, because I think every man wants to believe his hometown is a good place, and it’s somewhere he can come back to and try and make a life. But around here…that nostalgia doesn’t apply. We live in a society that if a person even admits they have tried a substance deemed illegal, they can lose their job, be barred from enlisting in the military, prevented from being a police officer, hold a snow ball’s chance in hell at being elected to public office, have your 2nd Amendment Rights stripped from you, be denied student loans, be sent back to prison if you are on parole or be sent to prison if you are on probation…and this is just from admitting somewhere in social media such as Facebook. Many cops are out there scouring Social Media sites monitoring people. It’s ridiculous. Are we a free society or not?
Meth was created in Germany during WW2 to help soldiers fight harder and stay up longer. They also gave it to American Airmen who were on long bombing raids to help them combat fatigue.
I’m sure certain aspects of the military still use Meth on their missions. I wouldn’t doubt it. If it means life and death for a Navy Seal or CIA operative, they are going to give them meth to help them stay awake to get through their mission. Would they ever admit this? No…but just think about it. You know it’s happening. It’s probably a highly refined pharmaceutical version of meth, but it’ meth none the less.

Did you see the front page news story for Yahoo today? The end of marijuana prohibition is very near. This is at the Federal Level now, clearing the way for States to end their prohibitions.
@Philly-That is not what it says at all. They are looking at changing some banking regulations so the people in states where they have legalized pot can deposit their money in the bank because under current regulations they can not do that. They are concerned about those businesses have tons of cash on hand with no way to secure it. That is all it is. It is a long, long, long way from legalizing pot. Learn to understand what you read.
…which is one more step towards clearing Federal barriers standing in the way for legalization. I wouldn’t be surprised if changing the designation of the drug away from Schedule 1 Controlled Substance won’t be happening next, or soon. I think they will probably keep the Federal Tax Stamp, because upon full legalization they will already have the means in place to collect their money at the Federal Level. The only ones who are going to be pissed in this are Federal Law Enforcement Agencies such as the DEA or ATF, and any local law enforcement agencies who have come to rely on extra monies to prosecute marijuana.
But then again, there are still many other drugs they have to prosecute…it just won’t be as easy for them since marijuana is bulky and fragrant and easy to detect with drug dogs and their own sniffing capacities as…(no I won’t insert swine joke).

Your efforts may have drawn out and killed hundreds of thousands of men and women who have vehemence for the United States in Iraq, but in terms of killing those operatives with the wherewithal and capability to really attack the United States on her soil, the numbers were probably very small. Furthermore your efforts probably created 1-2 terrorists for every 8-9 killed. So despite all the bloodlust and satisfaction in revenge killing, the efforts really didn’t make America safer because safety cannot be guaranteed when memories will persist for generations to come of what was done over there.
The only way to completely ensure America’s safety is to secure the borders, withdraw from all Muslim lands, and prevent anyone from traveling into the United States with intent to do harm.
As soon as the troops have withdrawn from Iraq and Afghanistan, as we are seeing from renewed violence, most of your efforts will have been for naught. That’s just the reality of sudden onset conquest. No people from a sovereign nation are going to accept the will of foreign invaders. History has shown they repel them. Only those conquering nations who have occupied their lands for many decades are able to eventually rub off on the culture. India and Britain are a good example.
Your efforts may have made headlines and captured the world’s attention, but in the end, it will have been judged to have been faulty. The billions should have been spent on border security and investment in renewable energy.
The killing that went on will take its toll on the minds and bodies of the soldiers who did the killing. The wheels of karma may turn slowly but they do turn, and eventually those who have killed for country will be accounting for what they did. Political violence may legally be exempt from man’s prosecution, but it is not exempt from the Universe’s.
My own theory on the matter is those who have killed others will be forced to serve those who they have killed. Not entirely sure about that of course, but it’s a hunch.
Then again, there may be no accounting or consequences for anything, and that’s always a possibility too. The concept of karma or atonement may be a construct of men’s minds, and not the real truth of the planet. I personally would want to set up circumstances that would place men in the least amount of conflict with one another as possible…just to be sure God isn’t planning a post-mortem smackdown.
Reports out of Washington states that thousands of refuges from Iraq and Syria have been brought over here and then misplaced and of the thousands, hundreds have been found on the terrorists watch list. More are to be brought over before his term is over so Obama is bringing the terrorists over here for my sons to fight.
And sadly the decision in 1947 to erect Israel started this never-ending Holy War. The Allied forces of WW2 fresh off of victory from winning the World War, thought they could do no wrong, and had the world to do with as they wanted. They erected Israel to promulgate their Judao Christian Religion and as a show of power. Yes it was a noble gesture for the Jewish people to finally have a homeland, but the decision, whether you agree or disagree was what has landed the world in the position it’s in today: The Judao Christians are engaged in a decades old Holy War with Islam. The stubbornness on both sides will never render a peaceful verdict.
So living in the New World like we do, we should take steps to distance and insulate ourselves from such cacophony. I seek the quickest path to resolve and world peace. American zeal and strength imagined they could handle whatever situation came down the road, because they were drunk with power. We are all bearing the consequences of that zeal. Americans disregarded all the Muslims living in that region and built Israel. I have no interest in Holy Wars, and we should get out of them immediately. BTW of the 27 countries in the world that allow or have decriminalized pot, 13 have higher death rates for cancer than the US; 14 have lower. Not really what you would expect if pot cured cancer.

I’ll let you in on a bit of anecdotal evidence: my father, while dieing of cancer, was smoking weed heavily. Yeah he felt better for a short time, but ended up in the hospital on opiates the last week of his life.

I watched a interview with two doctors today and they stated that not only has pot NOT been shown to cure anything other that a little pain temporarily they would never prescribe it because of the kidney and liver damage it causes. Even the head of Obama’s DEA is dead set against it

LVS, if public health and the reduction of health care costs is your primary concern, society would have to include alcohol and tobacco in its prohibition. Also, why stop there? You’d probably want maximum clean air, water and soil to go along with your healthy populace. Food would need to be regulated away from processed and preserved to organic and fresh. Wind and solar energy the exclusive forms of energy. If health care costs are truly your motivation LVS…then you may as well consider yourself a Greenpeace, Eco-Hippy. But we know this is not really your concern. Your arguments are much more specious, prejudiced, and superstitious than possessing some enlightened altruism. If you’re prepared to do all these things, I may be willing to buy your arguments LVS.
@Maybe: I would favor the decriminalization of the natural plants coca and poppy…yes. IF they occur naturally they are ours to use. WE can have another discussion about the refined products made from those plants, but in their natural and raw state, they should be ours if we choose to have them.
God gave us the plants and the animals to use but at the same time he gave us the wisdom to create, example medicine to make us better. So that being said then he also gave us the wisdom to make meth or extasy or acid, so should those be legalized too?
Those are being used by people, as we speak. Look soldier, there are myriad substances in the world in even more myriad configurations and combinations. It’s impossible to regulate everything. So the basic guideline needs to boil down to this: Is the substance in question being marketed or explained fully as to what the effects might be were a human to inhale, ingest, inject, or absorb it? If adequate and truthful labeling is placed on the product, then it should be legal to consume. There can be regulations as to how the product is marketed, but provided the product is not following deceptive practices or being forced or pushed on a person, essentially the consumer should have the right to purchase or use it.
Put another way…we see that D Con sells rat poison right? And you can go to Menard’s and buy chemicals to clean your home, concrete or swimming pool which are very toxic and dangerous if ingested. The labeling is placed on the product but it is sold anyway. If a human consumes the product in a manner against what the label prescribes they do so at their own peril…but law enforcement would not be there to charge someone with committing a crime because they ingested D Con rat poison would they? They may place them in the mental ward of the hospital for observation, but there would be no crime associated with those who make the rat poison, or those who ingest it.
Do you see where I’m going with this? There are already thousands of toxic chemicals in use and available but the government doesn’t charge people if they misuse them. The same should apply to meth, cocaine, heroin etc.

LVS, there are several different arguments going on in my opinion.
1. Whether or not natural plants should be banned in their unrefined state…ie. marijuana, coca leaves, poppy etc.
2. Whether refined substances such as cocaine, heroin, etc should be illegal.
3. To what extend should governments be able to punish people for drug possession or manufacture
4. Should alternative treatment plans substitute incarceration?
In any scenario I don’t believe the government should have the right to punish people to the excess they are able to.
It’s fair to have a discussion about cutting people’s welfare benefits off for those who wish to consume substances deemed illegal. That should extend to alcohol and tobacco as well though.

He’s not my new friend. I just heard about him now. And I can’t believe you WOULDN’T be supporting someone who burned down the house of a meth dealer. Especially someone at that apparent level. I’m not so sure I support the idea of relying (and waiting) on the legal system to achieve justice. I’m just surprised that someone like this has been operating in our area. When I lived in Oregon, I saw and met people like this all the time…and I even helped protect Old Growth Forests myself for a period of time acting as a transport for supplies to the tree-sits…but I would never have it in myself to actually resort to arson to achieve the goal. I wish I were more brave when it came to all that. But really it’s because I made a choice to be more of a mouthpiece, and use my skills of communication to achieve legal change. I’m too honest and talkative to do anything like arson. Achieving political change takes all sorts of actors. Some are operational, and some are communicative. I’m more of the propaganda (using the term in its positive connotation) side of things. If someone were doing Earth Liberation Front activities in my area..I wouldn’t even want to know about it. I would praise them, provided no one got hurt…but I wouldn’t want to know who they were or what they were doing or when. This is pretty much the modus operandi for how ELF (Earth Liberation Front) works. It’s mostly done anonymously.
Again, this is all news to me, and I find it interesting.
Of course….so having a concert at the band bandshell might cause some people to party too much and get in trouble. Because of that fear let’s stay away from ANYthing that might be considered progressive and would draw thousands of people to the CL/MC area, which in turn would be amazing revenue all summer/fall long.
Let’s keep tearing down all of those things over the years that gave CL their face of being a fun tourist community. We tear down the Waterfront and put up a condo. MarLus changes owners and has not been the same since….. changing names more than an alcoholic changes his underwear on any given night. Tear down Central School and put up housing for the elderly and a lame ass thing called Central Gardens that overall does nothing for the economy. They should have put the pool where Central Gardens is and put a miniature golf course, a frisbee course, or left the south part of it a nice park where kids could play. There would be more than enough room for a parking lot as well. Now they are building more housing for old folks on the north side of Central Gardens. In my opinion, this has been one of the biggest blunders the city leaders have ever made. They had a chance to make that be one cool place for kids and families to go. It would be located right in the middle of town for others to see and to draw them downtown. Sorry, but how many people like to walk around all day and look at flowers…..even if they are wacked out on meth like so many people around here are.
There used to be a waterslide or something on the island. How cool would that be to have some kind of an amusement park or even somehow clean that up and have concerts out THERE!!!????
CL had RAGBRI a few years ago and the town was rockin’!! People were downtown having a blast socializing and having fun. Were there a few people who partied too hard. I am sure there were…. and so what. You are going to let a town die because of a handful of drunks being stupid?! I saw in the paper where some old lady was upset because it was 9:30pm and she could hear the music playing at the bandshell still. Too bad, Granny!! Take your hearing aids out along with your teeth and turn on reruns of Lawrence Welk and get your old ass to bed.
There used to be a DART drive-in ice cream place loong ago and even a small amusement park next to the miniature golf course on the south side of the lake. In the mid to late 80s and even into the 90s CL was thriving. Now people in charge are making decisions that are turning this community into nothing more than a retirement community with a bunch of deadbeats and methheads sprinkled in to go along with all of those hypocrites that call themselves Christians…..walking around town like they own it even though everyone knows the guy is doing the horizontal dance with about 5 women in the same church who are also friends with the guy’s wife. Oh…did I get off topic? Sorry…
People of North Iowa keep having these solid ideas that would improve the quality of life in our area and the only real comeback anyone ever hears is “If you don’t like it….MOVE.” Well, if you haven’t noticed people and families HAVE been doing that slowly but surely over the last 15-20 years and more!!!!! You are NOT going to attract any young people or families to come to this area with what we have to offer. Craft shows, car shows, motorcycles, darts, bowling. I think some people in our area need to get out of the boundaries of Cerro Gordo County and realize there is much more to this world and life than what they are experiencing at the moment. Drive to Des Moines sometime and see what they do on the weekends. They used to have a party called Live at Clve every Friday. A local band would come in and play and it would draw thousands. You don’t need to live in Des Moines or Minneapolis to apply some of those same ideas to our own community. CL has a BEAUTIFUL downtown to do soooo much down by the Lake but they are stuck in their ways and then spout off in the paper about how great these things are. Hey Crabb and Bookmeyer…….wake up. People are EXITING your towns, not entering. Those craft shows and the Music Man Square isn’t quite bringing in the cash flow it was bragged about to do so when that fake, Carl Miller was running the show.
Time for me to quit my rant for the night. I am thinking maybe I can find reruns of Duck Dynasty on TV to see how to really live life to the fullest. 😉

I just don’t have the time…..and I have voiced ideas and concerns but let’s face it, the people with huge egos and who make decisions just don’t care about what is doing what’s best for the the area.

I have no problem needling myself from time to time as we all have our quirks! We will all get old someday so we will all need to live someplace. I am not suggesting we throw the elderly to the side of the road and tell them to take a hike, but we certainly have to look at the bigger picture and people need to take a serious look at the direction both CL and MC have been heading the last 20 years as it is only getting worse. If you want a town to GROW you have to have options for young people so when they finish school they will want to come back and raise a family…..or have things in our towns that will DRAW families to our area. If we continue to have a majority of the community who is in bed by 8pm every weekend night and who wants the town quiet by 9pm it will continue until there is nothing left. @Ben-Thanks, I understand. As one of the old people I get a little sensitive once in awhile. I must agree with you on this. Most old people don’t spend a lot of money. They watch what they have pretty close and only spend when necessary. Our idea of a good time is sitting in a park watching a free band play. Those apartments they built are way to expensive for most people and even if I was willing to spend it I wouldn’t live in one of those. They look like dormatory’s. City’s need to do things to bring in the young people and it sound like they have forgotten that.

Ben, the City of Clear Lake does not decide to build amusement Parks, they are all privately owned business’s. If you want to build a water slide by the lake, feel free, I am sure it would do great but you won’t make a profit because the cost of the property is to high to offset costs. Businesses do not close because of the City, a business closes if they can’t make a profit.

If they want to use their pulpit to encourage certain types of business and growth they have many ears. They can also approve or disapprove of permits, lessen or change zoning restrictions, allocate money, hold special meetings, and go on the record as the official representatives for the city. John, you are clueless if you believe what you just wrote. Whose bright idea was it to create Central Gardens? That really brings in the dollars for CL, doesn’t it?? The Music Man Square and FLW house?? Yep, those 2 staples of MC along with all of those ridiculous statues really bring in tourists as well. In all of those cases you are going to attract a spin doctor from 1 of the city leaders who will say they are bringing in millions of tourism dollars to the city. Just a flat out lie.
There are other reasons businesses close other than not making a profit, which I will not get into right now. All I will say is when the City Leaders don’t want a business to succeed there are some things they can do to make it difficult on the owner.
Here is another idea that wouldn’t cost much at all. How about putting a couple of basketball courts down by the seawall area kind of by the Yacht Club building?? Does that cost too much? I don’t think so.
So the Waterfront is torn down and condos are put up in its place. Great atmosphere, able to eat outside right on the lake and now there is nothing? Who lives in these condos that now block the lake? People from Des Moines who come up for a few months in the summer? I don’t know….just asking.
The Shady Beach Burns down…. another place to go for drinks and food right on the lake and in its place is now a storage building. Central School is torn down and up goes a waste of energy in a bunch of flowers you can’t even really see because there is a gate surrounding it. Don’t dare have more than 1 or 2 rock band concerts at the band shells because it is too loud and people who live downtown need to be in bed by 9pm.
By all means, don’t be creative and put money and resources into some new things that might actually make CL and MC more appealing to people.
Both towns were thriving 25 years ago. What has happened since then? Entertainment venues have come down and condos and retirement housing has gone up. 34% of the population in Clear Lake is over the age of 55 and 30% in Mason City. 96% of the people in CL are white and 94% in MC are white. Both areas have lost around 5% of their population in the last 15 years. Over 2,000 people have left Cerro Gordo County since the year 2000. I can’t wait to see where all of these great ideas the city leaders have made reality will put us in 15 more years. The lack of culture in North Iowa is disappointing unless you are in the population of rednecks in the area, of which there are many. People don’t like to hear the truth because it is not always pretty and people don’t like change. It is much easier to stick their collective heads in the sand and say everything is great until they wake up one day and ask themselves, “Where did everyone go?”

The Mayo Clinic has explained that we have a 4th drive as living human animals. A drive to alter our consciousness in some way. Many species, including dolphins and birds and other primates do this. It’s natural and we shouldn’t be judging and exploiting people who get caught.
Mayo also told my dad that he had cancer and after a year of radiation and kemo they found out that they never did a biopsy and he never did have cancer, so using mayo as an example means absolutely nothing to me.
I second that about the Mayo. They aren’t the world class health care facility they may have once been. In fact I kinda thought my experience there was idiotic and sucked. I mean really? Trying to induce an asthma attack in me to rule out asthma when clearly my condition is cardiac in nature? Were they trying to induce a heart attack in me right there in the office? I was horrified at what I witnessed at store yesterday and cound’t resist at least telling everyone what I saw here. A small child was alone in the toy departmant. I was concerend about her so I asked her is she was Ok. She had a toy in her hands and said she wanted her momy to buy it for her little sisters birthday. At that instant a woman came racing down the aisle and grabbed the child so hard the toy flew out of her tiny hands. She jerked the girl by the arm so hard i thought for shure her arm would be dislocated. The little girl screamed and the woman yelled at her to never leave her sight again.
If you had a child that disappeared you would panic and the adrenalin would take over giving you super strength. Even though it might look like she was abusing her child I would say she was more scared than anything else.

Do you hear that sound? It’s me walking on eggshells when I write this: It’s well known that Matt as the editor exploits crime and social travesty for his benefit. He knows what draws people’s attention to sell subscriptions. But is he any different than any other news service including CNN, FOX, etc? No, not really. The difference is, and to Matt’s credit, is that he allows in depth mostly unadulterated free-flow communication on the subject matter, whereas the other news outlets in our area do not. Also, from what I see, HE IS willing to publish opposing viewpoints, you just have to be willing to point him in the direction of one, or write one yourself and submit it. What other news service would allow you that? Not many, if any, and none in our area.
Sure the stories that come out of the hatch predominately showcase the worst of human behavior, but that’s what the consumers expect and that’s the formula KIMT, the Globe and others follow. It’s the minds of the population who largely determine this. And people want smut, and tragedy…always have, and probably always will. It’s what you do in between those stories that matters.
There is heaven and hell in this world, and I believe NIT is willing to showcase both. Matt is really just reporting on what our authorities are doing. I’d rather know who is being arrested and for what, than not to know. But I also agree that the angle does seem a bit as if Matt is supportive of this drug war. What is going on with the Mason City Street Dept? I understand not going out on weekends/holidays but this is getting crazy. No sand on busy corners, no plows at all on our residential street in SW.
I had to go to Mercy yesterday, and their parking lots and drives were in great shape. Maybe we should outsource management of the MC Street Dept to Mercy!

Ben, I completely agree. Where were you last election cycle? I proposed so many cool things for Clear Lake. I had visions of bringing bands like PHISH and other jam bands. I wanted to construct a floating stage off of city beach and have bands play. I was going to put chess tables along the seawall. I was even willing to put a drag strip on the outskirts of town for the motorheads. But guess what Ben? NO GO. The Blue Hairs wanted things real crabby and boring…and the motorheads wanted to drive their motorcycles around full strength…so they all shit on me…big time.

You could petition the city council until you’re blue in the face, and they will size you up, and if you don’t fit their mold, you’ll be DENIED on every proposal or permit you apply for. You are dealing with 1950’s Wax Museum people here.

One thing I do like that CL does with theirs is the free movie. Yes I know it sounds boring, but as a father of 2 small children this is fun free entertainment for families. The cover band idea needs to carefully approached. The
party every weekend isn’t always a good idea. When people party some get out of control. When the some get out of control you need more cops. When you hire more police you need to have more money in the budget which is why activities like the said 3 are just as important as the bandshell events to increase the tax base because no-one wants their property taxes to go up.
There were free outdoor summer movies the last 2 years at East Park, at the Band Shell. I think it was Friday nights, weather permitting.
It’s not whether they play a couple stupid movies in the parks. That has nothing to do with the main point being made. To have an air of renaissance and atmosphere of promise means cultural restrictions on behavior need to be loosened up. There needs to be a feeling that good progressive things can happen. Rents need to be affordable and minimal. Good leaders in city and county government need to be constantly planning and implementing progressive happenings around the city. Cops need to stop harassing and intimidating people, unless people are thieving or causing violence. The general climate needs to be that the village belongs to the people, and not the corporation, and not the wealthy, and not the police state and their “elected” leaders. You people will probably never understand because true freedom and liberty are so far removed from your abused, controlled psyche’. All you people know how to do is what you were told and what you are told. That places such damage on your mind, and you don’t even realize it. So sad, because the rest of us suffer. You know enough how to control, but you don’t know how to grow…and chill out.

Actually I only use a cane every once in a great while but to give him a chance I would use one. But I noticed other things had changed about his perception as well. As this friend was very lazy as a child. His parents just gave him things, and required no response ability of him.
But, he see’s everyone today as being lazy, except for him. And, tells about how brutally hard he worked as a child. And the problem with the youth today, is they aren’t like him… 🙂

Oh, my! Just saw the movie “August: Osage County” – worst 121 minutes of my life! What a horrid play (yes, it’s based on a play, ugh!)
I really, REALLY hope Streep and Julia Roberts’ agents fought them on their decision to act in this movie, else the agents are probably unemployed today. VERY UNCOMFORTABLE! I just about got up and walked out, but my wife wanted to see the movie. Afterwards, my wife admitted she about got up to walk out, but told herself, “this has got to get better.” Sadly, it didn’t.
SAVE YOUR MONEY – rent it for $1 from Redbox when it comes out, then apply for a refund. Harvey Weinstein and company should be ashamed of suckering the public into paying to see this movie about siblings, parents and children fighting and arguing throughout the whole movie!
SPOILER: Basically Streep is self-medicating on pain meds and alcohol because she has mouth cancer. Streep’s husband (Sam Sheppard) can’t stand her anymore, and drowns himself: when together for the funeral, Streep’s three daughters – including Julia Roberts as the “favorite” daughter Barbara; Ivy (Julianne Nicholson, formerly Detective Wheeler of TV’s Law & Order:Criminal Intent); Juliette Lewis as youngest daughter Karen; and Meryl Streep’s sister (Margo Martindale from TV’s “The Millers”) come together.
Turns out 50-something sister “Ivy” is sleeping with what she thinks is their first cousin, but turns out it’s their half-brother! (It’s okay, Ivy had a hysterectomy); Julia’s 14 year old daughter (played nicely by Abigail Breslin)is taught how to “shotgun” a reefer by her future uncle (at 50+ years old, I’d heard the term, but didn’t know until this movie what shotgun is), who in turn begs her to “show them to him.”
It’s down hill from there. The movie’s been nominated for three Screen Actor Guild awards – obviously, the nominating committee was as drunk and on-drugs as Streep’s character. 121 minutes you’ll NEVER get back!

Facebook and Religion
I’ve been looking at Facebook pages of many people I knew and grew up with and am quite shocked by all the religious church goers I see.
You see, I don’t go to church, but have always lived by a moral code. I never cheated, lied or stole. Now I see tons of people who I used to know who lied, cheated in relationships, stole and whatnot, who now go to church! I never did those things but do not go to church.
It’s funny and sort of ironic that if you were to judge me compared to them now, why most of you would prolly consider me an immoral pothead of sorts and them to be clean cut saints. When in reality it was me who behaved morally when no one was looking.
When I bought my first house the sellers asked if I go to church. I said no. They told me they are such and such religion and they go to such and such church. Then proceeded to lie after lie about their property they were selling.
I guess the moral of the story is just because someone goes to church and I use cannabis does not make me the immoral one. For many of these folks church is a smoke screen, a way to buffalo others into believing they are righteous.

And I want to thank you Iowa Sucks (whomever you are) for throwing your hat in the NIT ring. Up until your arrival there hasn’t been any straight shooters out there willing to speak up for the truth about life and death in North Iowa. It’s been mostly just banal bantering by the likes of Observer and LVS. Your hard examination of the truth is refreshing to read.
What you are doing is very important, even though many of the dim bulbs don’t recognize it. Like me, I believe you are attempting to stand up for definitions on what true morality, true ethics, true justice, are, and what true accolades should be given. This conformed isolated society here in North Iowa has its narrow and ignorant definitions on what humans are considered outstanding, and what humans are considered loathsome, and criminal.
These small minded, small town communities have held the monopolies on these definitions for a long time now. Up until my arrival, and now yours…they’ve been allowed to get away with it unchallenged.
Well these are new times, and I refuse to sit by and let small news outlets like KIMT, or the Globe Gazette, or even City Councils in Mason City and Clear Lake, keep this locked down.
There are many talented human beings in our community, many of which won’t ever get recognized by Mr. Tuttle Mayors such as Crabb, and Bookmeyer, because they don’t fit the limited mold these narrow minded men have for what qualifies as outstanding. Their accolades and honoring are losing steam. The charms don’t work anymore in this internet age.
Now if only the voters could catch up to the times, we can get rid of the long term career politicians that find themselves to the Clear Lake and Mason City Councils.
Whatever comes first…my move to Colorado, or real change in mindset. But I’ll pick the former, because the latter more than likely won’t happen anytime soon.

I’m deeply involved with my Yoga practice and my free form dance that I do…but I love the smell of marijuana, and find it to be very alluring, and sublime in its characteristics. I know the plant has a profound place among the world’s botanicals, and the persecution that has taken place and the assaults to marijuana’s reputation are unfounded, and obscene.
When the culture awakens to realize the earth is alive, and we are all apart of it, much like the movie Avatar, they will end these assaults against the earth and each other. Wars will cease, and humans can get down to the serious business of discovering why they are alive on this planet, and can develop true insight into the nature of the Earth, Reality, Consciousness, and our place on the planet and what we are truly capable of as human beings…the advances we can make.
We all should already be living to 200 years if it weren’t for all the setbacks over the millenium. I believe humans are capable or reaching physical immortality…but that is only after they have unlocked all the secrets of the millions of botanicals, and life forms on the planet, and have perfected integration with the earth’s natural energies, ebbs and flows.
I believe in a Taoist Harmonious Society and Human Immortality. This is what drives me.

Sorry, I didn’t mean to use the prohibition term “marijuana”. I should have referred to it as Cannabis. No, I do not smoke Cannabis or “pot” as you called it. I believe in the power of the earth and its creation, and no humans or governments should have the right to destroy part of the creation, or prohibit free and responsible use thereof.
If the government wants to ban something, they ought to ban meat eating, and put an end to the hundreds of thousands of slaughterhouses and the billions of cruel animal deaths.
If our government was comprised of high-minded individuals such as myself and others, we would be on our way to creating this immortal society that I speak of.
But this is both the profundity and the great sorrow of freewill. God has given us this creation and left it to us to sort through, and work out with each other. Like I’ve written in other articles and comments: I believe that God will reveal itself to us and return to the earth, only once we have sorted out all the problems of the world, and have mastered its pitfalls, and harnessed its secrets in a non-abusive way. All creatures are seeking immortality, and all are trapped in the pitfalls of Mara’s illusion, the snare of birth, illness, decay and death.
We should be helping one another through this, not hurting each other. Humans must awaken to this consciousness though, or it will never happen.
God will literally never return and the world will keep spinning on for eons…FOREVER…IF humans don’t escape. And the way to escape is to become aware…to raise your consciousness up, transcend, and then put into practice the results of your transcendence.
You almost had me agreeing with you then you started with the transcending stuff then I knew you were high. When I say pot I say that because it is easier to spell than the other words.
Tell me what parts you were agreeing with and what parts you weren’t. I’m curious. You mentioned transcendence turned you off. Transcendence can mean a lot of things. But something in my use of the term you disagreed with.

Actually, I read back through what I wrote and found my use of the term transcendence. I’m not sure why that part hung you up so much. People transcend things all the time. I meant to elevate your consciousness beyond the mundane, or above whatever suffering state you may find yourself in. It’s quite simple really, and can designate as high or as low as you can go, with no limitations. If you believe that consciousness is limited to whatever state you are presently at, you just haven’t tapped into the power of your mind.
Here’s an easy way to understand my use of the term transcendence. If were depressed about something, slouched in the couch, eating junk food, watching tv for hours on end, and a thought occurred in your mind to go hiking on a mountain, no matter the weather conditions, and you found the thought so ludicrous, but so stimulating that it lifted your consciousness out of the murky mundane place it was in, and you noticed your depression lifted a notch or two…that is transcendence. You just transcended from a lower spot to a higher one in your mind and in terms of freedom and liberty.
Total freedom and liberty means all factors are working in complete harmony…your body, mind, spirit and environment are as one, with no limitations to your movement…no pains, no aches, no lethargy, no downtime gap between your thoughts and the physical movement required to carry out those thoughts. IT’d be like an expert figure skater or skate boarder in the prime of their moment…all warmed up, or a runner who feels as though they have any possibility available to them once they are running. These are all examples of transcendence. When they stop running, or stop skating…they begin to come down again to a state of inertia…which they must rival again to overcome.
So clearly there are states of transcendence. I’m thinking you misinterpreted me, or have not had much experience with your own consciousness to a degree that you can sense when your mind is elevating itself out of states of depression or sickness. Meditators pay attention to these processes. Just because you’ve never delved into your own mind…doesn’t mean these things don’t exist. I may not understand a mathematics of physics formula, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. Same applies here.
SOMETHING TO DO.
Finally this weekend there will be things to do. The 3 main things I know of taking place this weekend. 1.) The Jack, if you have never attended one should. This is held annually over in Clear Lake on the lake. I have gone in the past at it is a great way to spend the day in the cold watching locals showcase and race their snowmobiles. 2.) The Beer Belly Dart Tourney. This dart tournament started in a local bar and has grown to the point to where it has to be held at the Clarion Inn this year. Some of the best throwers from Iowa and Minnesota are coming to take part in this years event. 3.) The Dave Evens Memorial. This is an annual 9 pin bowling event held at Mystic Lanes here in Mason City. Some of the best and not so good bowlers in our area compete in this event with money going to the Dave Evens scholarship fund.
I have attended all of these events in the past and must say they all three are a great way to spend a Saturday when there is no football.

Snowmobiles, darts, and bowling!! Outstanding!! I am going to hit that first activity right after I scoop up some roadkill and skin it for supper tonight and finish the next batch of moonshine for my family. Nothing better than North Iowa in the winter!! I guess I could always go to a FLW house and look at it or be mesmerized by the Music Man Square.

I understand the general discontent and forlorn that Ben and Iowa Sucks are feeling at suggestions such as these for entertainment…
But for the record, I find these activities to be fine and even enjoyable. Darts is fun. Bowling is fun. Watching the snowmobiles…well some may find that fun. I don’t knock people’s ideas for entertainment unless it is costing some animal their life, such as bullfighting, hunting for sport, or if loud engines are involved that are harassing people such as Harley’s with loud tailpipes. As snowmobiles can be very loud and irritating, I would recommend holding these events few and far between. But if fireworks can be granted permits to make noise, and bands in central park can…so too should snowmobiles.

You know what I would like to see next summer? Big tribal drum circles starting in Mason City Central Park and Clear Lake Central Park. Group drumming and dancing is a great way to get in touch with one’s inner rhythm and watching the girls dance can be quite alluring. Plus, it would help to rival the noises of the obnoxious loud Harley’s that dominate the scene.
If anyone likes this idea…contact me and we can show up with our congas and start drumming. I’ve been in some very intense drum circles and I really enjoy them. They are uplifting to the consciousness of the community. Let’s try it!

NO way. Snowmobiles aren’t nearly as obnoxious as a straight pipe Harley, or straight pipe Chopper. No way, no how. And the sound doesn’t penetrate as deeply or travel as far. I didn’t hear the snowmobiles at all. I have no problem with occasional events. Even if the Harley’s and Choppers wanted to have an occasional exposition, I wouldn’t mind. It’s the unchecked, constant one after the other, blatant violation of Iowa Code that bothers me. And also for any of you straight pipe supporters, you may not realize that part of my campaign against loud tailpipes also has to do with pointing out the hypocrisy by law enforcement as they selectively enforce the law. It’s not entirely about the noise, as annoying as it is to me. It’s also reading that someone was busted for drug paraphernalia or small scale pot possession, public intox, open container and DUI, but then hearing 150 Harley’s go by without so much as a cop batting an eyelash.

@Sucks-He was caught in my front yard. Him and the Reason boy and the two Jones boys were all in a Jeep that was pulled over by MC Police and then assisted by the highway patrol. I have heard he has liver disease and won’t last much longer. I thought his sentence was for 30 years. Could be wrong about that.
He was pulled over in Des Moines when he got busted for the crime that put him away. He got hep C from sharing needles as a young man shooting up steroids. His baby mamma and her two sisters were gorgeous and still are. I wonder where his daughter Stevie Joe is now, she must be about 24. It’s hard to believe how time flies sometimes. Iowa does not make laws regarding “singing”. He was convicted under the federal law. Federal sentencing law considers information provided as a mitigating factor in lessening a sentence from the federal sentencing guidelines. If you are charged in federal court, the sentence is much more severe than if you are sentenced in state court. Federal prosecutors are interested in information provided by defendants to build cases against others.

Ya, the kid actually put out a website from prison where he’s incarcerated for burning down something else. Something to do with animals. He’s seeking donations as a do-gooder for burning down things he doesn’t agree with. He said he basically got caught in the act and burnt down the house because his brother was addicted to meth. Only thing is, is his brother still had problems with meth after he burnt down the house.
The issue is not whether some drugs such as methamphetamine can be harmful to human health: Any substance when abused can be harmful to human health…including soda pop, candy bars etc. The point of contention is the role the government should play (if any) regulating or prohibiting substances, and subsequent enforcing, and punishing of citizens who violate their decrees. This is the real issue at hand for my position against the current methods being employed by the United States Justice System, Department of Corrections, State, County and Municipal Governments and their law enforcement agencies scattered across the globe.
Consenting adults should essentially have the right to consume or not consume any product or substance they choose to…and accept the consequences of their having done so.
Governments should make it clear what these substances do, regulate those who put out faulty or inferior products (if sold over the counter) and offer scientific evidence as the harmful, beneficial, or neutral effects of various substances…but they should NOT have the right to obstruct your free will, arrest and imprison you for your choice to consume a substance.
I won’t budge on this issue, because in the long run, this is the correct policy. The current policies of prohibition and punishment are not sustainable. Vital monies being used on futile drug wars could be used for such better purposes to advance our civilization.

I read that NY Times story. Exactly. If you or anyone else has noticed, I don’t confine myself to the medical marijuana argument, because that is just appeasement, and dodging the real issue…which is namely 2 main points:
1. Marijuana is a natural plant that has been on the planet for perhaps millions of years. Harvesting its natural fruit and smoking it or eating it involves no other process other than pyrolysis (baking) or combustion to extract its compounds.
2. Government shouldn’t be babysitting adults and telling them what they can or cannot do with their own bodies. The government is not supposed to own our bodies, and only has interest up to the point where our actions adversely affect (criminally) another human being or the shared environment in which we live.

My argument is not aimed at setting ablaze social decay and chaos…my argument rather seeks to legalize marijuana and then put the burden of proof on the government as to who is prohibited from its use. As it stands now…humans are automatically prohibited across the board, with no exceptions.
It should be that only those who cause criminal trouble to others and can be linked to using drugs should have their rights to consumption stricken or restricted…much like a license is suspended for those who drink and drive.

The “probable cause” is not whether or not drugs are present…the “probable cause” should be whether or not the use of those drugs has caused or is related to any crime being committed (other than the so-called crime of being in possession of the drug itself).

Most of our laws have been slipped in past the public’s knowledge by a mostly isolated group of lawmakers. Before the internet information age, the common citizen had next to no access to what was being done in Des Moines by legislators. All they knew was what the newspapers told them. If lawmakers passed a law, the common citizen thought: “There must be a reason for the law, so I’d better follow it”.
Consider recent city election turnouts: Only 17% of eligible citizens voted in the elections. The vast majority of citizens did not register their opinions, yet people were elected to offices regardless. Laws are passed in much the same manner. While only 17% of the population may actually know what is going on in the State House, and a further reduced .001% elected officials (compared to the general population) are making a decision as to what becomes law, once passed, regardless of how few people actually register their opinion on the matter, and once taken effect: The Law becomes Official Law and must be followed by millions of people who are within the borders of Iowa…citizen or non citizen.
So now add up all the city and state elections in past decades, and the 10-30% of voters who actually vote these people in, and you’ll see that what presents itself as OUR LAW, isn’t really OUR LAW at all, but rather The Laws of a chosen few.
This is why there is such stink and fighting over attempts to suppress voters, especially disenfranchised ones…because the minority few who hold power, know they can draft laws that keep those disenfranchised populations down, even to the point of harmful and against their own interests, as in the case of prohibiting marijuana (because mostly Mexican Indians used marijuana, and later African Americans). One of the things I called for this past election was a returning of power into the hands of the majority, and out of the hands of the minority in making legislative decisions. Did anyone happen to see the news when the pot shops opened up in Colorado? There were lines a mile long and 99.9% of the people you saw in line and 100% of the people interviewed were a bunch of stone cold burn-outs…. and they were paying anywhere from $300-$500 per ounce for this crap. @Lynne-OK, I looked at it and while I am sympathetic to it I can’t say there is anything in there that is iron clad proof. Anyone can put anything they want on the internet and that does not make it true. Where you can show me this I could show you a dozen or more saying just the opposite. Now that being said, I am not a fan of big Pharma at all. I think they are screwing to public to squeeze more and more profits. Plavix is a great example. They made billions off the drug and as soon as the lost the patent and generics became available the price dropped from $100 for a 30 day supply to $3.00 for a 30 day supply. I know of people who went broke trying to get that drug to loved ones. Insulin is another one. They control the cost so it is $450.00 for a 30 day supply. How many people on social security can afford that and it cost them nothing like that to make. The other point is we have a process for changing the LAWS and we should follow that process. Without law society falls apart. Hell, without law I would be out there hunting a couple of people right now. My point is, if it is as good as you say then lets get everyone behind it and legalize it. I will never be in favor of recreational pot. Just seen to many instances where it has gone bad and people can say what they want, I have seen it myself.

LVS – The judges keep letting them loose because there is no where to put them. Talk to any county attorney and he/she will tell you that every time they put a person in prison, someone has to get out of prison. Then, it comes down to the judge to decide whether or not the trade off is worth it. If you got 5 offenders who you sentence to prison, then 5 more get out. Those decisions have to be tough to make. I don’t think I would want to make that decision.

The money that police departments take in through forfeitures is substantial. They do not have to prove that whatever they seize was illegally obtained. Once it is in their possession, it is essentially theirs. Because of that, it seems that making busts involving drugs directly profits the department making the bust. Therefore, if marijuana is legalized, it follows that the incidental money that comes to a department through forfeitures, will dry up. This loss of revenue has to be a problem especially for small town departments who use that money to help them obtain more officers, more equipment and more training or to just build up their ‘slush funds’. It isn’t surprising then that these law enforcement people don’t want to see legalization become a reality.
And just think, some of that money is Blood money. That’s right the money also pays for the food on their tables to feed them selves and their children. Blood Money!

When we find out “the other guy” threw the first punch, yes it was fair. I’ve noticed that those who start a fight then get their butts kick always whine about a “fair” fight. You want a fair fight; take up a scantioned fighting sport (boxing, MMA, kick boxing. etc.).
@ Wayne, I remember that fight, I was in the commons area of the high school when it happened. Did not see the fight go down but will not forget coach Alvarez trying to contain Todd’s anger. You could tell it was all Mr. Alvarez could do to hold on to Blodgett, keep him from breaking loose to go back after your cousin. He had his hands full, I will tell you that, Todd was like a mad man that day. Your cousin is Chuck Wesley, remember him too. Just like you say, your cousin threw the first punch. I was in Todd’s class. He got in alot of fights, lost most. Got his ass kicked about every couple weeks, got suspended a bunch of times. The thing is, he would never back down, and I do mean never. He is smart tho, I give him that. Never seen no kid could make some teachers look dumb like he did.
@ Scott. I remember Todd getting in some fights, but I mostly remember how he could remember things. He asked to borrow my notes for a history test he did not even study for. This was just before lunch, and our history class was right after lunch. I let him read thru my notes which he got back to me before class. I probably had a good 15, 20 pages of notes. I always did the readings and paid attention and took good notes, and he knew I was serious about my schooling! When we got the test back the next time in history class, Todd got a better grade than I did. And he had not studied, or taken any notes, and he usually was daydreaming when Mrs. Hastings our teacher presented the material. It was just like his eyes could take a mental picture of what I wrote and he remembered it for the test.

The story I love to tell was I was out of position when a 14 pointer walked by about 75 yards away during a snow storm with 30 mph cross wind. I aimed 10 feet behind and above him and when I released he turned and stopped then took off and when I found my arrow there was fur on the broadhead. The next week he was hit by a truck.

I have found out that since deer can only see in black and white if you just stand in front of a tree the deer can’t see you, I have had them walk right up to me close enough to almost reach out and touch them. Just keep your arms inside the outline of the tree.
