Northern Iowa man accused of drunk texting in UTV crash

A Northern Iowa man was potentially hurt after cops say he was drunk and texting as he rove and then crashed his UTV into a ditch.

HAWKEYE, IOWA – A Northern Iowa man was potentially hurt after cops say he was drunk and texting as he rove and then crashed his UTV into a ditch.

On March 9, 2026, at approximately 9:50 PM, Fayette county deputies were dispatched to a UTV accident near the intersection of 200th Street & P Avenue in Hawkeye, Iowa. After further investigation it was determined that 40-year-old Christopher Alan Cosgriff of Maynard, Iowa, was operating his 2021 Polaris Ranger UTV when he lost control of the vehicle and went into the ditch.

An investigation determined Cosgriff to be intoxicated. He was taken to an area hospital for evaluation and later transported to the Fayette County Jail where he was held for an initial appearance. Cosgriff was charged with:

  • Operating While under the Influence 1st Offense (Serious Mis.)

  • Leave Scene of Accident – Injury (Serious Mis.)

  • Open Container – Driver 21 years old and older (Simple Mis.)

  • Use Electronic Communication Device (Simple Mis.).

Fayette County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Hawkeye Fire and Gundersen Ambulance Service.
