MASON CITY – Registration for fall semester at North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) is underway. Classes begin Monday August 26.

Financial aid for the 2013-2014 academic year is still available to students who are planning or considering attending college. To be considered for many federal financial aid programs, a student needs to file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The application is used to determine a student’s eligibility for federal and state financial aid.

“Many students get confused by the state filing priority date of July 1, 2013,” said Mary Bloomingdale, financial aid director at NIACC. “Even if you have not filed by the July 1 priority date, it is still important to file the FAFSA. In order to be considered for federal grants or student loans, a student must have submitted their application. Filing the FAFSA does not require a student to accept the financial aid offered to them.”

It’s easy to apply. The FAFSA has made improvements to the online application, allowing students and parents to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool to transfer the required tax information directly from the IRS’s website. This process reduces errors and saves families’ time in filing their FAFSA. NIACC offers free assistance in filing the FAFSA. Contact the NIACC Financial Management Counselor to schedule an appointment at 641-422-4417.

Do not pay to file the FAFSA. The FAFSA is a free application for financial aid. You can file the free application at www.fafsa.gov.

“A college education is an investment in a student’s future,” Bloomingdale said. “Federal student aid can help student’s pay for college and achieve their educational goals.”

Contact your college’s financial aid office to assist you with questions related to financial aid.
