November 27, 1930 – February 13, 2026

Bernita Ann Stanton, 95, of Greene, passed away peacefully Friday, February 13, 2026, in Mason City, Iowa after a short illness. Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 21, 2026, at 1:00 PM at St. Mary Catholic Church in Greene, IA, with interment at Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene. Visitation will be Saturday, February 21 from 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM at St. Mary Catholic Church. Woodley Funeral Home of Greene is caring for Bernita and her family.

Bernita Ann Stanton was born November 27, 1930 in Greene, IA to Martha (Maxwell) and Ambrose Stanton. She lived on the family farm outside of Greene until 1966, when she moved into town. Bernita graduated from Greene High School in 1948 and worked at the Butler County Rural Electric Company for 45 years, retiring in 1994. Bernita’s passions were her family, friends, church, community and her cats.

Bernita was very involved with her church, St. Mary Catholic Church in Greene, and as a member of Court St. Mary’s #512 chapter of the Iowa Catholic Daughters of the Americas. She was a frequent lector and organist there for almost 38 years. In 1996, she completed the three-year Catholic Lay Ministry Formation Program in the Archdiocese of Dubuque.

She volunteered for twelve years at the Greene Community/Senior Center, after her retirement. Decades ago, she was awarded the prestigious “I Love Greene Days” award, as a highly valued citizen of Greene. She was instrumental in continuing the yearly Stanton Family Picnic, which was started by her grandparents, MF and Teresa Stanton, in 1909.

She has had eight indoor cats since 1986, when she realized how much she enjoyed them, after a “foster fail” for a family member. Her garage was always home to alley cats that she nurtured.

She is survived by her siblings Harriet Clabough of Cedar Falls, IA, and James Stanton of Bellevue, NE as well as her sisters-in-law Mary Stanton (Harry) of Mason City, IA and Susan Stanton (Thomas) of Huntington Beach, CA. She had twenty nieces and nephews, and scores of people called her “Aunt Bert.”

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Charles, Thomas, Harry, Roger and William Joseph, and her brother-in-law Loren Clabough and sisters-in-law Elsa Stanton (Charles), Janice Stanton (Roger), and Janice Stanton (James).

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Greene Volunteer Ambulance or St. Mary Catholic Church.
