OTTUMWA – This Iowa teen is facing serious charges after he allegedly brought a gun to a family-friendly sports venue to harass someone, and then battled police officers when they tried to arrest him.

On Friday, January 23, 2026, at approximately 7:01 PM, the Ottumwa Police Department responded to the JBS Sports Center located at 103 Church Street. This venue is descried as “a 66,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility designed to support athletes of all ages and abilities… a premier space to play, train, and grow.” The call for help was in reference to a report of a male with a gun causing a disturbance.

Police arrived, and while investigating the complaint, a suspect tried to run from officers. The suspect -armed with a handgun – then resisted being placed into handcuffs. The suspect was identified as 19-year-old Amir Jahad Sutton of Ottumwa, Iowa.

Sutton was charged with the following crimes:

• Assault with a Dangerous Weapon, an Aggravated Misdemeanor

• Harassment in the 1st Degree, an Aggravated Misdemeanor

• Interference with Official Acts while Armed with a Firearm, a Class “D” Felony

Sutton is being held in the Wapello County Jail with a $9,000 bond. Records show he was guilty in 2025 of disorderly conduct – fighting or violent behavior.
