Waterloo shooting leads to one man dead, suspect charged with murder

WATERLOO – A shooting in Waterloo has left one man dead and another behind bars, charged with murder.

On Friday November 21, 2025, at approximately 11:01 AM, Waterloo Police responded to 236 Boston Avenue on a report of a shooting. Upon arrival Patrol Officers located a male shooting victim. Officers started life-saving measures, until Waterloo Fire Personnel arrived on scene and took over. The male victim was transported by Waterloo Fire Ambulance to Allen Hospital. The male victim later died. The victim has been identified as Nyavais Johnson, age 21, a resident of Waterloo.

According to an obituary, “Nyavais was born on August 22nd, 2004, in Waterloo, Iowa, son of Stephanie Johnson and Merchant Johnson. He was a beloved son, grandson, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin, and friend whose presence brought joy to everyone around him. Growing up as the youngest in his family, Nyavais was inspired by his brothers, encouraged by his mother and sister, and motivated by his father. His ambitious ways allowed him to succeed in so many ways, acknowledging his personal growth he finished high school early, and become a proud graduate of East High. His first form of employment was at John Deere, where he was the youngest employee during his time there. Nyavais dreamed of owning his own business, and that dream now lives on through his brother and father. He was an inspiration to others, especially his friends, and his determination to succeed allowed him to approach life with a mindset built for success. Nyavais found joy in spending time with his family and friends. His laughter and joy will never be ­forgotten.”

Waterloo detectives charged 31-year-old Jessie James Harmon III with murder in the 1st degree. He remains jailed, awaiting further court appearances in the case.
