AMES – Iowa State University has notified the Big 12 Conference that the Cyclone football team will not be participating in a bowl game, school officials announced today.

Members of the athletics administrative team and the previous coaching staff met with the players this morning and had a robust discussion about the team’s ability to play in a postseason bowl game. After that discussion, the players voted not to play in a postseason game due to the lack of healthy players to safely practice and play.

“The administrative staff and coaches respect and support the players decision,” said ISU Director of Athletics Jamie Pollard. “Our student-athletes have had an incredible season and we are grateful for their leadership as we worked through this process with them today.”

Iowa State concluded the 2024 football season with an 8-4 record.

UPDATE: The Big 12 Conference is issuing a $500,000 institutional fine to Iowa State and for opting out of their participation in the Conference’s bowl pool.

“While the Conference acknowledges the difficult timing around coaching changes, the Big 12 is responsible for fulfilling its contractual obligations to its bowl partners,” the Big 12 said in a statement on Sunday.

Iowa State lost their long-time head coach Matt Campbell to Penn State and then within minutes announced the hiring of Jimmy Rogers as the replacement.

  1. Well I guess you’ll just have to pay the players more money. Won’t this solve the problem? Or does paying college athletes create the problem? Hmm

    1. College football is practically a pro sport now, just like college basketball is. It’s capitalism now, so it is what it it.
