Police investigating “suspicious” deaths of two people after forcing entry into Iowa apartment

INDIANOLA – Police forced their way into an apartment in this small town south of Des Moines, only to find two persons suspiciously deceased.

On Friday, February 17, 2023, at 12:30 PM, the Indianola Police Department officers conducted a welfare check at 1315 E Iowa Avenue, apartment #7. The officers forced their way into the apartment, finding two deceased adults. Officers, along with agents and crime scene technicians with the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI), are investigating the deaths as suspicious.

There is no threat to the public related to this investigation, according to police. The names of the deceased are being withheld pending family notification.

Police say this is an ongoing investigation.

The names of the deceased were released on February 21. The victim is 59-year-old Sheila Ann Kelly. Police say she was in a domestic relationship with 56-year-old Jack Gordon Heiss, Jr. He was discovered at the scene with a fatal, self-inflicted injury.

Just the day before in nearby Waukee, two people died in a murder suicide.
