MASON CITY – The 16th Street and 17th Street intersections with U.S. 65/South Federal Avenue in Mason City are closed to traffic beginning on Monday, Aug.11, weather permitting, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation’s Mason City construction office. This will mark the start of the final phase of the U.S. 65 reconstruction project in Mason City for 2025.

Currently, U.S. 65/South Federal Avenue is closed between 10th Street and 16th Street with the 16th Street intersection remaining open. On Monday, Aug. 11, that will change as the 16th Street and 17th Street intersections will close. Access to businesses in the old Sears/Target/Southport shopping area will be from 15th Street SW.

U.S. 65/South Federal Avenue in Mason City is currently closed to through traffic between 6th Street and 19th Street. The roadway between 6th and 10th streets has been opened to local traffic and other sections will open in the coming weeks as the reconstruction continues. The Iowa DOT appreciates your patience and understanding as crews continue to finish work in these locations to prepare the roadway for traffic.

The Iowa DOT reminds motorists to drive with caution, obey the posted speed limit and other signs in the work area, and be aware that traffic fines for moving violations are at least double in work zones. As in all work zones, drivers should stay alert, allow ample space between vehicles, and wear seat belts.
