Nancy Jean was born July 23, 1931, in Mason City, IA, the only daughter of Vernon K. and Juanita (Simmons) Belseth. She grew up in the area, attending Mason City Schools. When her mom remarried, she gained six siblings: Bill, Shirley, Sally, JoAnn, Catherine, and Davie. On March 28, 1948, she married Lloyd Knapp Sr. in Mason City. Lloyd died in 1975. Nancy cared for people as an aide at St. Joseph’s Hospital for 28 years. She was attentive to her patients and consistently went above and beyond for them. She was personally requested on a very regular basis and took great pride in taking care of others.

Nancy found companionship and spent many years with Don “Bill” Herzog. She loved him dearly; Don passed in 2000.

Nancy loved being a mother. She was blessed with seven children: Sheila, Cindy, Judy, Jane, Lloyd Jr., Harley, and Avis “Sue.” Her days were filled with laughter and joy, often spent watching tennis matches or baseball games, cheering for her favorite players as passionately as she did for her family. In the evenings, she would unwind with classic Westerns, relishing the tales of adventure and resilience. Her home, adorned with vibrant cardinal decorations, served as a heartfelt tribute to her beloved family members who had passed. Each figurine stood as a reminder of the love that continued to surround her, even in their absence.

Nancy cherished time with her family and was a wonderful mother and grandmother. She was straightforward, a little stubborn, but always so happy. She had her own way of pronouncing things, a delightful quirk her family will forever cherish.

Surviving are her children, Jane Zuehlke, Sue Shauer, Cindy Kiefer and Harley (Marilea) Knapp; 9 grandchildren; many beloved great-grandchildren; siblings, Bill Sharp and Shirley (David) Wallswick; as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family members.

Preceding her in death are her children, Sheila (Mike) Portis, Judy (Ray) Stump, and Lloyd Jr.; sons-in-law, James Kiefer and Fred Shauer; husband, Lloyd Knapp Sr.; companion, Don Herzog; parents; siblings, Sally, Joann, Catherine and Davie; as well as extended family.
