CEDAR FALLS – UNI redshirt sophomore Cory Land will become the latest Panther wrestler to compete on the international stage as he represents the United States at the U20 Pan American Championships beginning Thursday in the Peruvian capital of Lima.

Land, a Moody, Alabama native who missed competition during the 2023-24 collegiate season due to injury, will compete in the 60-kilogram Greco-Roman bracket on Thursday with the qualifying rounds and repechage matches beginning at 10 a.m. CT. Finals in all Greco-Roman weight classes will begin at 5 p.m. CT. Opening round matchups have yet to be announced.

Land was named to the World Team for the U.S. after sweeping consecutive matches against Elijah Cortez (Daniel Cormier Wrestling Club) back in late May at the U20 World Team Trials in Geneva, Ohio. In addition to competition in Peru, Land is also expected to compete at the United World Wrestling (UWW) Championships this September in Pontevedra, Spain.

Land’s appearance in Lima comes just weeks after fellow UNI teammate John Gunderson captured a silver medal at the U23 Pan American Championships in Rionegro, Colombia.

Ranked as the nation’s third-best high school wrestler at 126 pounds in 2022, Land compiled an 11-6 record during the 2022-23 campaign with a team-high seven falls, winning the 133-pound title in his collegiate debut at the Grand View Open. He also recorded runner-up finishes at the Cyclone and Pat Flanagan Opens, while also placing fourth at the UNI Open and sixth in the consolation bracket at the Soldier Salute.

With a high school career record of 203-0 and four Alabama high school state titles, Land was named the winner of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame’s Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award (DSHSEA) for the nation’s most outstanding high school senior male wrestler for excellence in wrestling, academics, citizenship and community service. Later, he became the first Panther to win the national DSHSEA.
