CORALVILLE – An Iowa man was arrested after his two dogs died in a cage, sweltering for 10 hours all day with no water.

The incident took place on the evening of July 3, 2024, when police went to the Coralville Reservoir area to check on dogs left in a cage. Police say 46-year-old Thomas John Pagels
confined his dogs in a small, sweltering cage, causing unjustified pain, distress or suffering, resulting in the death of both dogs.

According to a police report, “Pagels (pictured at top) left his dogs in a 2 foot by 3 foot cage that was 2 foot tall from before 7:00 AM until around 5:00 PM. This cage had a grill tarp over it that was not breathable. The two dogs were approximately 75 pounds and 50 pounds. This cage was entirely too small for these dogs and there was no water provided in this cage. It was hot and humid on this day with a high temperature of 85 degrees with little to no breeze. Pagels actions caused both dogs to expire due to the heat conditions.”

Pagels was charged with aggravated misdemeanor animal neglect and taken to jail.
