Iowa felon nabbed by cops after drive-by shooting at a park

DES MOINES - An Iowa felon squeezed off multiple rounds from a handgun at a popular Des Moines park, then fled the area, but savvy cops were on the case quickly and nabbed a suspect nearby.

DES MOINES – An Iowa felon squeezed off multiple rounds from a handgun at a popular Des Moines park, then fled the area, but savvy cops were on the case quickly and nabbed a suspect nearby.

Des Moines Police Department patrol officers arrest one person, and seize one handgun, following a shooting incident at Union Park.

On Sunday, June 9, 2024, at approximately 9:25 PM, Des Moines Police Department patrol officers responded to Union Park, 2009 Saylor Road, to investigate reports of a shooting. Officers learned from witnesses that the suspect had fired multiple gunshots and then fled the area.

No injuries were reported. One vehicle was damaged by gunfire. Several shell casings were recovered at the scene.

Following investigative leads, patrol officers located the suspect in the 1000 block of E. University Avenue. He was taken into custody without incident and a handgun was seized.

Following further investigation by Des Moines Police Department detectives, 34-year-old Des Moines resident Charles Sims has been charged with the following offenses:

• Intimidation With A Dangerous Weapon (Class C Felony)

• Felon In Possession Of A Firearm (Class D Felony)

Sims is currently being held at the Polk County Jail.

Des Moines Police Department detectives continue this investigation.
