MASON CITY – In recent memo at City Hall, Don Nelson told Janet Solberg she had it all wrong.
At a City Council meeting held May 24, when a task force presented their recommendations on what would work best for Mason City if a multi-purpose arena and development project was pursued by the city, Solberg said that Mason City lost 3,000 people in population in the 2010 census count.
Nelson says this just isn’t true. “Your figures were wrong Janet, Mason City has not lost 3,000 in population,” Nelson said in the memo.
Max Weaver called Solberg on her figures during the meeting, saying “We certainly have not lost 3,000 people in Mason City since the last census. It’s no where near that. I would hate to have that figure get out there.”
Solberg went on to say that her hometown of Northwood is “gaining in population.”
Nelson added some figures in his memo, showing Mason City lost only 1,093 people since the 2000 census, a 3.7% population loss. According to Nelson’s figures, Northwood lost 110 cictizens, a 3.0% loss.
