IRAQ – President Trump ordered the bombing of the top Iran general, who was responsible for countless American deaths, sparking a possible severe backlash from the U.S. enemy nation.
Friday morning, President Trump took to Twitter to explain his motivations for the order to remove Gen. Qassem Soleimani, the head of Iran’s elite Quds Force and said to be the second most powerful man in Iran, from the ranks of the living:
“General Qassem Soleimani has killed or badly wounded thousands of Americans over an extended period of time, and was plotting to kill many more…but got caught! He was directly and indirectly responsible for the death of millions of people, including the recent large number of PROTESTERS killed in Iran itself. While Iran will never be able to properly admit it, Soleimani was both hated and feared within the country. They are not nearly as saddened as the leaders will let the outside world believe. He should have been taken out many years ago! The United States has paid Iraq Billions of Dollars a year, for many years. That is on top of all else we have done for them. The people of Iraq don’t want to be dominated & controlled by Iran, but ultimately, that is their choice. Over the last 15 years, Iran has gained more and more control over Iraq, and the people of Iraq are not happy with that. It will never end well!”
Soleimani was at an Iraq airport this week when a U.S. drone unleashed a bomb that killed him.
Defense Secretary Mark Esper said in a statement, “Suleimani was actively developing plans to attack American diplomats and service members in Iraq and throughout the region … This strike was aimed at deterring future Iranian attack plans.”
The killing of Soleimani has been met with mixed reactions across the political spectrum. Many are saying that this is a major escalation of the tense standoff between the U.S. and Iran that could lead to a shooting war, jittery markets, destabilization of the Middle East, and fresh new attacks on American soldiers and other interests in the region. Iran is an ally of China and Russia and has had a growing influence in neighboring Iraq, which the U.S. has been trying to rebuild after decades of war.
Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei, Iran’s Supreme Leader, released statements via Twitter as well, saying “Years of sincere, brave efforts fighting against the devils& villainous in the world & yrs of wishing for martyrdom on the path of God finally took the dear Commander of Islam, Soleimani, to this lofty status. His blood was shed by the most barbaric of men. Brigadier General Qa’ani has been appointed new Commander of IRGC Quds Force. The strategy of the Quds Force will be identical to that during the time of Martyr General Soleimani. The Iranian nation will honor the memory of the noble Major-General Soleimani & the martyrs with him—particularly the great Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis— & I declare 3 days of mourning across the nation. All friends—& enemies—know that Jihad of Resistance will continue with more motivation & definite victory awaits the fighters on this blessed path. The loss of our dear General is bitter. It is not ok. Obama took a lot of heat for his drone strikes.
