DES MOINES – Iowa has the second lowest unemployment rate in the nation, according to July numbers released by Iowa Workforce Development on Friday. The state’s unemployment rate dropped to 2.6 percent last month, hitting an 18-year low and tying Iowa with North Dakota for No. 2.

“This new ranking speaks to the strength of our state, its economy and its people,” Gov. Reynolds said. “But we’re not going to stop. We’re unleashing opportunities for Iowans to get training and prepare for rewarding careers through Future Ready Iowa. Our employers hire these skilled workers and grow, making our communities even more prosperous. I want our young people to see the opportunities available to them in Iowa and make our state the home where they live, work and raise families.”

Future Ready Iowa is Iowa’s goal of 70 percent of Iowans having education or training beyond high school by 2025. Right now, just over half of our workforce has post-secondary training.

Registration is open for 13 Future Ready Iowa Regional Summits, with more to be announced next week. The summits will be held around Iowa and bring together business, community, economic development and education organizations to create local strategies to solve local challenges and needs.

Iowa Workforce Development Director Beth Townsend encouraged Iowans to participate in the summits.

“As the Future Ready Iowa Alliance recognized, workforce needs are local as are the solutions,” Townsend said. “The fall summits are a tremendous opportunity for leaders to work together to identify needs and design community driven solutions.”

  1. All the naysayers just can’t stand the truth. The economy is booming under Republican guidance. 401’s are exploding, stock market is up, people are working and buying things they were never able to buy under Democrats. Keep up the good work Republicans.

  2. I wouldn’t be bragging there Gov… A huge number of the people have 2 and 3 jobs. If you want $ 15 an hour, you need 2..And 3 jobs to make a bit over $ 20. So 40 hrs at minimum wage = $ 15,600 or 100,% under the poverty level for a family of 4. And that is gross, not net pay. I think it is a travesty for people working 40 hours a week, to still live under the Poverty Level. This is the working poor. Take home pay at that date would reflect…Approximately $ 206.55 per week. So you work 2 1/2 weeks for a minimum rent…Next utilities, food, child care, gas, car insurance, You do the Math. Good luck back peddling on this !!

    1. When will people accept the truth? This world is for the rich and beautiful. The masses are comprised of the plain, ordinary, fat, and ugly. The beautiful pivot towards wealth when they awaken to their lot in life. It’s a club, and most of us aren’t invited.

  3. So says the governor. Just think what the unemployment rate would be, if all those help wanted signs were filled.

  4. And the average population age of 56 years old. Rule of thumb is anyone between the ages of 18 and 50 need to move out of state to seek their fortune. Remember Iowa’s economy is a agronomy one. And pretty sure we don’t need more farmers with the limited land. Most cities are really just towns and Clear lake is really just a village. Let’s get back to the basics here. We just need a butcher, baker, and a candlestick maker. A couple more bars wouldn’t hurt either. lol
