MASON CITY – Police in Mason City are searching for those who commit the deadly act of texting while driving.

The Mason City Police Department alerted residents just after noon Friday that “We have a team of officers looking for drivers who are texting while driving today. We’ve stopped five already.”

An officer warned, “don’t be the next one pulled over and cited. Remember, getting caught is not the worst thing that could happen; the distraction could be deadly.”

According to the National Safety Council, cell phone use while driving leads to 1.6 million crashes each year. Nearly 330,000 injuries occur each year from accidents caused by texting while driving. 1 out of every 4 car accidents in the United States is caused by texting and driving.

  1. Mason city police need to take a good look at themselves and write themselves tickets for texting, speeding, no blinkers, no seat belts, etc. see this everyday.

    1. I agree, I drive for a living and also need to follow DOT laws, the police in town violate many of them all the time. I see it as well.

  2. “sad but true” check sometime just how much money the city gets from a citation?? pennies on the dollar so I don’t think its the money end of it. they are out there trying to keep you safe, with no thanks, maybe the texting driver they just stopped saved you from a head-on as they weaved over the line while texting, its idiots like you that make the world go around. I always said those that bad mouth law enforcement are the ones that law enforcement spend their time on. be a wonderful world without them, wouldn’t it. staying awake at night to protect your property is what would happen without the laws. most calls are from people who are like sad but true, with a come help me or I need help. enough said

  3. its very obvious that Anonymous, has had a run in or two with the law. he would probably be the first to call for help if her needed it and then critizize about the help he got., some people just can be pleased with anything or anything god gave them

  4. Riding around California and noticed it is illegal to use a hand held cell phone while driving. Even though you can hook them up to be operated hands free people none the less still abuse this dangerous habit. It is so annoying seeing people texting while driving and is in a strange sort of way ‘driving under the influence’. Common sense says that using a hand held device such as a cell phone while operating a
motor vehicle should be made illegal in Iowa. But who has time for common sense anymore. That’s the smart phones job. lol

    1. This isn’t about the police, it is about safety for everyone. Obey the law and you won’t have to worry about the police.

  5. Texting while driving is wrong and dangerous, but I’m guilty of having done it on numerous occasions. I’m doing my best to break the habit and I think enforcement is good.

  6. They can just look in the mirror. Oh wait they are allowed to fiddle around with electronics and speed without a seat belt on.

      1. The police break these laws constantly is what I’m saying you moron. They can look in their mirror and see an asshole texting while driving.
