Iowa City police investigate three armed robberies

IOWA CITY – Iowa City Police officers are investigating three reported robberies that happened between the evening hours of Tuesday, January 31, 2017 and the early morning hours of Wednesday, February 1, 2017.

First Incident

On Tuesday, January 31, 2017 at approximately 9:24 p.m. Iowa City Police responded to the 800 block of Bowery Street for a report of an armed robbery. According to the adult, male victim, he was walking when he was approached by a man asking him for the time. When the victim responded the man pulled a black handgun and pointed it at the victim’s face, then demanded money. The man then took the victim’s wallet, cell phone, and keys before running away. Iowa City Police checked the area, but a suspect was not located.

The victim was not hurt. He described the suspect as a black male, standing approximately 5’11” with a medium build. He looked to be in his late twenties or early thirties. He was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and baggy dark-washed jeans.

Second Incident

As officers were investigating this incident the Johnson County Joint Emergency Communications Center received a call from a North Liberty woman advising that she and her son had been victims of a robbery. She told Iowa City Police Detectives that she was parked at 740 Westwinds Drive waiting for her fourteen-year-old son to get into the vehicle. As her son was getting into the passenger side, a man approached and pointed a black handgun at her son and demanded money. When they advised they had no money he grabbed her purse and dumped it out. He then ran from the parking lot. Iowa City Police responded to the area, but were unable to locate the suspect.

The woman and her son were not hurt. They described the suspect as a black male, standing approximately 5’11” to 6′. with a medium, heavy build. He was unshaven and was wearing a black stocking hat, a navy blue or dark gray sweatshirt, and dark pants.

Iowa City Police Investigators are actively investigating both robberies and any possible connections between the two.

Third Incident

On Wednesday, February 1, 2017 at approximately 2:22 a.m., Iowa City Police responded to the 10 block of S. Dubuque Street for a report of a robbery. According to the adult, male victim, he was approached by three males who demanded money. The victim told police that the three males then assaulted and took personal property from him before fleeing the area. The victim sustained minor injuries. Iowa City Police officers checked the area and did not locate the suspects.

The first suspect was described as a black male, standing 6’2”, wearing a puffy black coat. The second suspect was described as a black male, 5’8” to 5’10”, wearing a dark beanie and a hoodie. The third suspect was described as a black male wearing a dark colored sports jacket.

The Iowa City Area CrimeStoppers is offering a reward of up to $1,000 for information leading to the arrest of the suspects involved in these three incidents.
