Iowa woman shoots and kills man who allegedly abused her and their children

DES MOINES - A young Iowa man was shot and killed after he allegedly physically abused a woman and at least one of their three children, and police are not filing charges at this time.

DES MOINES – A young Iowa man was shot and killed after he allegedly physically abused a woman and at least one of their three children, and police are not filing charges at this time.

after a woman he lived with suffered a broken nose and a child was alleged attacked by the deceased.

On May 20, 2023, at approximately 6:07 PM, Des Moines Police Department patrol officers and Des Moines Fire Department rescue personnel responded to 2225 University Avenue to investigate a report of a shooting incident.

First responders arrived at the apartment complex to find 23-year-old Des Moines resident Ezekiel Williams critically injured by a gunshot wound to the head. Des Moines Fire Department medics transported Williams to Mercy – Des Moines Medical Center.

Williams remained on life support until his death on May 27.

Des Moines Police Department detectives responded to the scene on May 20 and have been investigating this incident since. Witnesses have been interviewed, evidence is being examined, and investigative leads followed. During this investigation, detectives have learned the following:

•Williams and the 22-year-old female have been in a long-term domestic relationship. They share a home and are parents to three children; ages 3 years, 2 years, and 6 months old.

•Evidence indicates that prior to the shooting incident, Williams assaulted the 22-year-old female resulting in a broken nose and facial bruising and swelling, and assaulted one of the children resulting in facial bruising.

•The 22-year-old female retrieved a firearm that was stored within the home and shot Williams.

Des Moines Police Department detectives, assisted by the Polk County Attorney’s Office, continue this investigation. At this time, no criminal charges have been filed related to this incident
