DES MOINES – A long duration heat episode begins Sunday and continues through much of the work week, the National Weather Service warns.

A large ridge of high pressure is forecast to build into the central United States by Sunday and remain persistent throughout the week. Maximum temperatures are expected to rise well into the middle 90s on Sunday with heat index readings ranging from 100 to 103 degrees. Monday and Tuesday are anticipated to be the hottest days as maximum temperatures will rise to the upper 90s and possibly top 100 degrees in some areas. Dew points are forecast to range in the upper 60s to the lower 70s monday and Tuesday afternoon. This will result in heat index readings to range from 101 to 106 degrees monday afternoon and tuesday afternoon. By Wednesday…a weak cold front will push into Iowa and may provide limited relief to the hot and humid conditions into Thursday. However…maximum temperature are likely to remain in the lower to middle 90s.

According to the National Weather Service, there are numerous precautions that can be taken during prolonged heat events. Drink plenty of fluids…stay in an air-conditioned
room…stay out of the sun…and check up on relatives and neighbors. Take extra precautions if you work…exercise or spend time outside. when possible…reschedule strenuous activities to the early morning or evening hours. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water. To reduce risk during outdoor work…schedule frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments.
