Guatemalan man sentenced for illegal re-entry

justice2SIOUX CITY – A man who illegally re-entered the United States from Guatemala was sentenced on June 18, 2013, to time served.

Casimiro Chilel-Lopez, age 23, from Guatemala, received the prison term after a May 6, 2013, guilty plea to one count of illegal re-entry. At the guilty plea, Chilel-Lopez admitted he had been deported from the United States.

Chilel-Lopez came to the attention of Homeland Security Investigations’ (HSI) on March 14, 2013, while he was incarcerated in the Sioux County, Iowa, jail for providing false identification.

Chilel-Lopez was sentenced in Sioux City by United States District Court Judge Donald E. O’Brien. Chilel-Lopez was sentenced to 2 months imprisonment. He must also serve a 1-year term of supervised release after the prison term.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Kevin C. Fletcher and investigated by HSI and the Enforcement and Removal Office of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Bureau.

  1. Just wondering who is going to supervise him in Guatemala. Oh wait, I forgot, there are new immigration laws now. If you do jail time in the US you are automatically a citizen.
