217 2nd Street SW is already gone for the most part. The city will turn this area into “natural setting” that can be enjoyed by citizens.

MASON CITY – McKiness Excavating, Inc. of Mason City is now working to demolish two buildings on 2nd Street SW.

The buildings, which were owned by the City,  are located at 217 and 303 2nd Street SW, just south of parking lots between Southbridge Mall and Principle Financial.  City staff had said that the buildings are “dilapidated and unsightly” and “create a potential unsafe environment.”

The Mason City Council approved a plan to demolish the buildings at their September 4th, 2012 meeting.  The demolition of the buildings is being funded through the use of Tax Increment Financing funds secured from valuation of the Community Growth TIF district.  The City may seek a re-imbursement to this TIF account.

The land under the buildings will be restored to a “natural setting.”  This includes the clearing and grubbing of brush, bank shaping and stabilization, removal of sidewalk, replacement of curb and gutter and then furnish and spread top soil and seed.

303 2nd Street SW will be demolished next.

  1. Maybe, just maybe – tax dollars could be used to put in an ice skating rink or something fun in this area! Not much to do in River City 🙂
