Mary Ellen (Melver) Stevenson, 73, of Shell Rock, Iowa, died peacefully in her sleep at Evans Senior Living in Cresco, Iowa, after a long battle with her health on January 1, 2026.
Mary was born in Beaver, Oklahoma to Kermit and Mary (Hoskinson) Melver on October 14, 1952. During her youth, the family moved to Cresco. She lived in Cresco for many years, raising her family and working hard, before moving to Shell Rock, Iowa, to live out the rest of her years.
Mary enjoyed spending her free time with friends and family, getting lost in a good book, and keeping her mind sharp with crosswords and trivia. Between Mary’s feisty personality and her rambunctious storytelling, she made a lasting impact on everyone she crossed paths with.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents Kermit and Mary Melver, brother Dale and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
She is survived by her sister Pat Melver (Jerry McCumber) of Waverly, Iowa, daughters Jeanne (Jim) Frye of Harmony, Minnesota and Lisa (Bryan) Willson of Shell Rock, Iowa; grandchildren: Logan (Miranda) Frye of Austin, Minnesota, Jamie (Craig) Comstock of Fountain, Minnesota, Britney (Jackson) Willson of Shell Rock, Iowa; and three great-grandchildren: Aleigha Frye, Vivian Frye and Virgil Comstock; along with numerous cousins.
A celebration of life will be held later this spring with burial in the New Oregon Cemetery in rural Cresco.
