CHARLES CITY – This Charles City man on probation from a previous felony eluding case in which he failed miserably in his quest to escape police, was back on the road flaunting the leniency a judge showed him, this time allegedly driving recklessly and putting a child at risk.

Charles City police report that they responded to an incident at 1:05 PM on Saturday, January 24, 2026. Officers responded to the 900 block of Kelly Street for a report of a reckless driver. After an investigation, police arrested 24-year-old Tanner Hulbert of Charles City on the following charges:

  • DRIVING WHILE BARRED

  • DRIVING WHILE SUSPENDED

  • RECKLESS DRIVING

  • CHILD ENDANGERMENT

Hulbert was jailed that day at 1:31 PM and released the next day at 1:53 PM, records show. He awaits a court hearing set for February 13.

Hulbert (pictured at top) is currently serving three years of probation for a felony eluding case. Records show the Charles City police department dealt with Hulbert on October 13, 2024. Officers attempted to stop a vehicle Hulbert was driving in the area of Milwaukee Street and Spriggs Street at 11:41 AM that day. Hulbert refused to stop and a pursuit began that led the parties out of town. Hulbert eventually stopped the vehicle but tried to run from officers on foot. He was nabbed on numerous charges, including felony eluding.

Judge Elizabth Batey showed mercy upon Hulbert in the case. Although guilty of a felony, he was sentenced on August 1, 2025, to just three years of probation, a suspended fine and bill owed to Iowa courts for $1,140.00. Records show Hulbert never paid a dime on this balance and he is now facing a revocation of his probation. His driving privileges were apparently also barred, but that very October, he was nabbed illegally driving in Cerro Gordo county, and he is awaiting a plea hearing in that case next month.
