January 3, 1941 – January 14, 2026
Michael Leonard “Mick” Maassen, 85, of Mason City, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, January 14, 2026.
Mick was born in Mason City on January 3, 1941, the son of Walter and Helen (Kammerer) Maassen. In his early years, he lived in Texas, which sparked childhood “rancher” dreams and a lifelong love of country life. Mick later returned to Iowa and graduated from Rockwell High School in 1959. He played baseball for Mason City Junior College. Mick enlisted in the Army National Guard and was proud to have served his country. In 1975, Mick married the love of his life, Sherry Luth.
Mick was a passionate entrepreneur who worked with the Conklin Company. The customers he served and the people he met meant a great deal to him, and he took pride in the relationships he built. In addition to his business, Mick raised sheep and later cattle, living a proud farm life.
A gifted athlete and respected mentor, Mick was a standout pitcher for many local fastpitch softball teams, including Butt’r Topp, and competed at the national level. He generously shared his talents through coaching and pitching, teaching countless athletes, including his children and grandchildren. His impact on the sport earned him induction into the River City Softball Hall of Fame.
Mick lived his life grounded in faith, family, and service to others. He was respected for his hard work, honesty, and willingness to lend a helping hand, including involvement in 4-H and service on the North Iowa Fair Board. Mick was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He was always present for his children and grandchildren, cheering them on. When his grandchildren came to visit, some of their favorite memories were made playing on the farm alongside Grandpa.
Mick was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Helen Maassen; his sisters-in-law, Barb Akert and Sue Fitzgerald; and his brother-in-law, Ron Fitzgerald.
He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Sherry Maassen; son, Tim (Kim) McGuire of Edina, Minnesota; daughter, Molly (Brandon) Geise of Story City; and his cherished grandchildren, Drew McGuire, Matt McGuire, MaKayla Geise, Katie McGuire, Madison Geise, and Miley Geise. He is also survived by his brothers, Mart Maassen of Indiana and Cary (Betty) Maassen of Iowa City; and his sister, Ramona (Robert) Jeffrey of Mason City. He is further survived by his brothers- and sisters-in-law, Rick (Gwen) Luth, Rhonda (Ivan) Stones, and Jeff Luth, all of Kearney, Nebraska; Mike Luth of Omaha, Nebraska; and Mary (Greg) Anderson of Littleton, Colorado, along with many nieces and nephews, and valued friends and neighbors
Mick will be deeply missed and forever loved. We rejoice in the promise of Scripture: “Well done, good and faithful servant.” His life was a blessing, his faith was strong, and his legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
A memorial visitation will be held Sunday, January 25, from 3:00 to 5:00 pm at Hogan Bremer Moore Funeral Home, 126 3rd St NE, Mason City, IA 50401. A memorial service celebrating Mick’s life and faith will be held Monday morning at 10:30 am at Grace Evangelical Free Church, 440 N Illinois Ave, Mason City, IA 50401.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests gifts be addressed to the Maassen Memorial Fund for donation to the Alzheimer’s Association and other charitable causes.
