MASON CITY – A young man was shot in Mason City over the weekend, leaving a neighborhood startled, but no one there is cooperating with a police investigation.

On Sunday, August 31, 2025, at 11:56 a.m., the Mason City Police Department was called to the 700 block of North Delaware Avenue for a report of a large fight and a shooting. Officers arrived at the incident and found several people in the area.

One male was transported to the MercyOne North Iowa Emergency Room by private vehicle. He has been identified as DaShawn Maxwell, age 19, from Mason City. Maxwell sustained a single gunshot wound that is not life threatening.

Officers completed a neighborhood canvass and collected evidence at the scene of the shooting.

The follow-up investigation is ongoing, but is hampered by a lack of cooperation from parties who were present at the time of the call.

The Mason City Police Department was assisted at the scene by the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact Lieutenant Brett Hollander, Criminal Investigation Division, at the Mason City Police Department at 641-494-3564. Tips can also be shared with North Iowa CrimeStoppers.
