Alma Melinda Shafer, age 73, of Mason City, passed away peacefully under the care of MercyOne North Iowa hospice on Sunday, June 29, 2025 at her home. Arrangements are with Fullerton Funeral Home. Per her wishes, Alma will be cremated and a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
Alma was born on September 4, 1951, in Mason City to Marvin and Clara (Krambeer) Oxley. She was raised in Mason City and attended Mason City schools. Alma became a mother to three children: Bob, Bradley and Mindy. She worked as a cook for several care facilities such as the county home in Mason City, Maple View Manor in Nora Springs and the I.O.O.F. home in Mason City. On August 15, 1981 she was united in marriage to David Shafer in Rock Falls, IA.
Her hobbies included going for walks; especially walking at the Southbridge Mall and taking camping trips with her family. She enjoyed going camping at Camp at the Woods in Rock Falls, IA and Swiss Valley Campground in Dubuque, IA. Above all else, she loved spending time with her grandchildren and spoiled her granddaughters as much as she could.
Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, David Shafer; children: Bob (Angie) Eldridge, Bradley (Melissa) Eldridge and Mindy (Tony Criss) Swift; 5 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren and two sisters: Gerene Fistler and Judy Eldridge.
She was preceded in death by her parents and four brothers.
