STORY COUNTY, IOWA – A bald eagle – America’s official national bird – was struck by a motorist on an Iowa roadway and injured Friday night, but emergency responders were able to heroically save the creature.
Friday night, Janaury 31, 2025, Story county deputies responded to a vehicle that struck a bald eagle just east of Nevada, Iowa. The injured eagle was found in the roadway by responders.
“But thanks to quick-thinking witnesses, it was moved to safety,” the sheriff’s office said.
“Story County Conservation stepped in to transport the eagle to the Iowa Wildlife Center for care.”
Back in December, Congress passed a bill then signed by President Joe Biden, officially designating the bald eagle as the national bird of the United States.
