RURAL COLFAX, IOWA – An Iowa man emerged from a rural home and opened fire an an unwanted male individual who was in violation of a no-contact order, and cops came and nabbed the old-timer for unloading bullets upon the trouble seeker.
On June 5, 2024, at 4:50 PM, the Jasper County Sheriff’s office received a call from a reporting party at a residence in rural Colfax, regarding shots fired at an individual during a domestic altercation. The reporting party indicated that they had fired shots at another individual who fled the scene on foot.
During the investigation, it was determined 42-year-old Ryan Doty of Altoona, Iowa, came to the address and had a verbal altercation with 69-year-old Norm Hopkins of rural Colfax. Hopkins then fired shots with a handgun into the vehicle that Doty was operating on the Hopkins property. Doty then backed down the driveway and fled on foot. Doty was later located at another nearby residence.
Jasper County Sheriffs Office, Colfax Police, and the Iowa State Patrol, all responded to the area and assisted in the investigation. Once Doty was located, Colfax EMS was contacted to respond. Doty was transported to a medical facility with minor injuries.
After being treated and released, Doty was taken into custody and transported to the Jasper County Jail and charged with two counts of violation of a no contact order- simple misdemeanors and an arrest warrant for Harassment 1st Degree, an aggravated misdemeanor.
Norm Hopkins was charged with Intimidation with a Dangerous Weapon, a class “C” felony.
