Covid robs Iowa prison of convicted child sex offender

CORALVILLE – Covid took the life of a convicted Iowa sex offender.

James Charles Kleppe was pronounced dead, likely due to complications related to COVID-19 and other preexisting medical conditions, the Iowa Department of Corrections says. He died at approximately 6:25 PM January 28, 2021, at the Iowa Medical and Classification Center. Kleppe was 79 years old at the time of his death.

His convictions were for the crimes of Lascivious Acts with a Child (two counts) and Sex Abuse 3rd Degree which carries a lifetime supervision clause. His sentence began on August 31, 2009.

This death marks the department’s 16th death in connection to the COVID-19 pandemic.
