CHARLES CITY – A garage fire was quickly extinguished Wednesday in Charles City.

The Charles City Fire Department (CCFD) responded to a 911 report of a garage on fire at 103 Spriggs St. in Charles City at about 1:55 PM Wednesday afternoon.

Upon arrival, smoke was visible from one side of a residential detached garage, near the roof line. Inspection of the condition of the interior of the two stall garage found there was no smoke or fire inside. Firefighters removed siding and sheeting from the exterior of the garage where the smoke was, and found a small amount of fire that was extinguished quickly.

Further inspection with thermal imaging and some additional removal of material from the garage ensured that the fire was completely extinguished with no further fire spread. The fire was deemed under control within 15 minutes of arrival of the CCFD. Approximately 15 total firefighters responded. CCFD responded with two engines upon initial notification.
The people present at the time of the fire safely escaped, and no other fire-ground injuries were reported.

According to Floyd County Assessor online records, the home is owned by Keith Dykstra.

The fire remains under investigation, but the fire started on the exterior at the base of the garage near the slab. There was minor fire and water damage to a portion of the garage. The CCFD was back at the station and in service around 2:41 PM.

The CCFD was assisted by the 911 Communications Center, and at the scene of the fire by the Charles City Police Department, AMR Ambulance, Colwell Fire Department, and the Floyd Fire Department.
