CLEAR LAKE – A Mason City woman accused of embezzling tens-of-thousands of dollars from Lake Chevy no longer claims she is innocent of the felony charges against her and will be sentenced in June.

Back on October 28, after an investigation, Clear Lake police charged Amy Monahan, age 42, from Mason City with Ongoing Criminal Conduct, a Class B Felony; 1st Degree Theft, a Class C Felony, and Forgery, a Class D Felony. She was jailed that day.

The charges concluded a seven month investigation into reports of misconduct by Monahan while she was employed at Lake Chevrolet, in Clear Lake, from 2013 through 2016. During the course of the investigation, it was determined Monahan misappropriated over $50,000 in funds during a two year period of her employment.

While employed as officer manager, Monahan was responsible for employee payroll, employee benefits, accounts payable, accounts receivable, reconciliation of accounts and monthly financial reports.

Monahan is alleged to have: taken money, received extra employee benefits, used business funds to pay on personal credit cards, and forged checks all without permission or knowledge of Lake Chevrolet.

On October 31, Monahan posted the required $4,000 cash bond and was released from jail. She hired local attorney Joel Yunek to represent her. On December 19, she and Yunek entered a not-guilty plea. A jury trial was scheduled for March 7.

However, at a March pre-trial conference, Monahan indicated she would accept a plea deal in this case. She is now set to be sentenced on June 13.

  1. I learned years ago in 1961 that no one can be trusted when Bernice Geiger embezzled $2.15 million from her father’s bank. She, however, gave a lot of her money away to charity, as scholarships, and to businesses. Go figure. She served 5 years of a 15-year sentence and went home to live with her parents. She also worked with the FDIC to revamp banking rules to recognize embezzler situations and prevent them.

  2. I was one of the people that said she was not guilty of this crime. I thought she was not even capable of this crime. I guess I was wrong!

    1. I worked at another business where Amy worked and I would have never expected this from her. She was so nice and well liked there. I was surprised to hear this as well. I don’t know what else to say, she is a good person, don’t know what happened.
