Cause of fatal Mason City house fire undetermined

MASON CITY – Extensive damage has made the determination of the cause of a fatal house fire to not be known, the Mason City fire department said today.

The Mason City Fire Department responded to a fatal house fire at 118 13th St NE. The time of call was 10:55 PM on December 10, 2016. Fire department personnel found three and a half year old Vicente Gonzalez in a bedroom of the residence. The victim was transported to Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

There was extensive fire damage to the living area of the home. The sleeping areas of the home sustained significant heat and smoke damage. The fire was discovered by a family member, as well as a neighbor. 911 was called by the neighbor. The fire was extinguished by Fire Department personnel.

It was determined that the fire originated in the living room area of the home. The cause of the ignition of the fire is undetermined due to the significant fire damage to the room of origin.

Mason City Fire Department personnel were assisted at the scene by the Mason City Police Department, and The Iowa State Fire Marshal’s office.

No other information was released.

i heard the father came home and found the house on fire. did he leave a 3 yr old home alone. witness saw him come home, hope they come forward

I heard the neighbor pounding on the door woke the father up.

Was the child in the house alone? So sad.
