Just left John Adams signing my child up for school, cops where there writing tickets for parking on left side of horse shoe .They don’t care that is like that every day out there but they write tickets on signup day. Pretty hard to enforce this when there isn’t enough parking. It’s a fricking nightmare everyday there.
Wait until you have to endure the high school. There is ALWAYS someone parking in the driveway right on the curve. The curve that is impossible to get by when people park there. There’s been many times I’ve honked at whoever is parking there, and they just sit there staring at their phone acting like they didn’t hear you honking. Last year there was a lady with an extended van that was always parked on that curve. Not looking forward to another year of it.
There is no doubt that the parking at the high school is bad, but, it is bad at all of the schools. Parents go to pick up their child and in so doing they put them in danger. I can’t count the number of times I have seen close calls at Hoover.

I think this happened in the early 80’s?Always wanted to know the truth behind this tragedy, but I heard he was intoxicated while at work. Do you know did his family ever get any compensation out of it? McNider’s owned the Cement Plant back then I think.
@Anonymous-Yes, I knew Charley and worked with him some. There were lots of Franks around back then. I remember reading about him being killed at work (which wasn’t all that unusual) but I don’t know if he was drinking. Lots of people did back then. Now they just smoke pot and try to kill their co-workers that way.

@Reality Check-I already did and when my wife picked me up off the floor I threw up. How can a school system have less and less students but claim to need more and more money every year. They have more assistants and secretary’s in one school than we had in the whole system when we have three times as many students. Time to fire them all and get in some one capable of managing.

@Reality Check-I wish I had a answer for that. I know Matt used to attend all of the school board meetings and was sandbagged all the time. They have been getting away with it for years. There is no accountability on their part at all. All they have to do is say, I need more money and they raise taxes.

@Allen-I voted and my wife did too. We were about the only ones though. I saw maybe four or five other people go into the church. The ladies working there were very happy to see us as they were bored to tears. I don’t understand people that want to bitch but won’t get off their dead butts and vote.

Also, take a drive by the two houses on the corner of 2nd street and Monroe. The same addresses that are on the police scanner quite often. Any given time of day, all these people do is sit on the porch. All day long. Obviously they have no jobs, they just sit on their butt and collect their food stamp cards and welfare. So that’s what this city is now….drug dealers and lazy people that contribute nothing to the community except crime. If it was possible to get these people out of our town, that would solve many, many problems.

Good post. Because alcohol is legal, it is overlooked by most people as being dangerous. While there is nothing wrong with (responsible )drinking, how many people that sit in a bar for 3 plus hours is drinking responsibly. The only ones that would answer, I am, are in denial. Prohibition wasn’t all wrong. Unfortunately when the government figured out that they could reap some benefits, it was all good.
@Allen-they are trying to do the same thing with pot. They have figured out they can tax it and get their pet projects done that way. Just like alcohol, it is a dangerous drug when over used.

I guess I would have to make a exception to alcohol or illegal drugs as they can directly affect other people. If people would drink and even smoke pot responsibly it wouldn’t be a problem, but there are to many people out there like the Real Peter who can’t handle it and are a danger to other people.

@Not Peter-I have two relatives in Colorado and I can tell you what they say about legal pot. One is a pot user and the other is not. Both say it is the biggest mistake their state has ever done. Even the user says there are people laying in the gutters, not working and stealing to support their habit. They both say the cost is much more than the money they are bringing in and that the cartels have moved in big time. As for different laws in different area, there always have been differences based on the people in the majority in each state.

UI lived in a dry county in Wisconsin some years back and I can tell you that was the wetest dry county you had ever seen. The churches were the ones pushing it but were just lying to themselves. It was the same thing in Texas where there were dry counties scattered around. It didn’t stop anyone who wanted to drink. It was like when Iowa was a 3.2 state, there were all kinds of private clubs. I used to run alcohol back in the day.
So if I understand what you are saying, laws do not dictate human behavior when it comes to alcohol and marijuana? Would we be better off diverting OUR taxpayers money from the “war on drugs” to helping people passed out in the gutter and lawns (in charles city) to get aid/education/treatment for the problem they have instead of throwing them in boxes and/or fining them?
@Not Peter-There is something to what you say. However, these people have had lots of opportunity to change their lifestyle. They get “free” education, food stamps, “free” rent and healthcare. Hell, they even get “free” cell phones and all it has done is make them want more “free” stuff. I think by giving them everything without having to earn it has helped make them the way they are. I agree that locking people up for victimless crimes has done nothing but make criminals out of otherwise decent people and is not working. It is nothing but a source of revenue for government. I don’t know how to separate them from the real criminals.

These people live in a different world than we do. They trade stolen goods just like money. They steal from us and brought in the stolen goods by the car load and traded them for drugs.It went on all night long. I see a lot of them on the jail roster. They live in the night. They come and go all night long and steal anything left outside or not locked up. Some very nice looking girls with newer cars would come there and be inside for 30 minutes and come out carrying a plastic bag. What do you think they did to get the…
Alcohol is the most toxic drug. Meaning there is no antedote for overdose. If you OD you either live or die. Alcohol IS a killer drug. Pot is a safer drug. Non toxic and non addictive. (has no physically addictive properties)

I see Fenchel won his lawsuit against the City of Mason City regarding leveling his house. I would like to hear more, I don’t subscribe to the Glob.
@John-Not much to tell. The city got caught trying to pull a fast one and had their hands slapped. They didn’t give him enough or proper warning. The judge said that his house was a disgrace but because the city used short cuts he threw it out. I am willing to bet they do it all over because the house is still a pig pen, but this time they will follow the rules. It cost us taxpayers a lot of money because they think the rules are not for them. Just like the Federal Government.
did the judge actually use the word disgrace? is the house really any worse TODAY compared to say 50% of the homes on the north side. finally, this was in the news here on NIT, about a year ago when this started. so why wasn’t a follow up printed here?
This house isn’t the only one in Mason City that needs to be cleaned up. Why was this man singled out? If one person has to abide by city codes, then make all of the owners. Especially on rentals. There’s some rentals around town that the landlords needs to pay attention to also.
The city didn’t single them pout. The NEIGHBORS got tired of the rats and squirrels and smell so they complained to the council. I don’t blame them. I would have too. So the city council responded to their pleas. The neighbors have rights too. And the name isn’t Fenchel. It’s Fluggum. You need to pay better attention.
@me-The city only looks at houses that they receive complaints on. They don’t have enough manpower to go look for trash homes. They do a good job for the number of people doing this. The inspectors have to do reports and even go to court on some. There are houses that should be torn don or repaired all over town. If you know of some call the city.
All you folks who are on social security or disability need to write your legislature and complain. They are looking at stealing money from social security which will affect disability and medicare, to fund the Federal Highway program. They don’t want to add a road tax because a election year is coming so they are taking money anywhere they can. It makes no sense at all to take money from a fund that is already in trouble and besides it IS OUR RETIREMENT MONEY that we paid in. Raise hell with the crooks and stop this.

I think you should only be able to take out of it what you put into it. That is only fair. No government handouts to people who should have prepared for their retirement.
@Anonymous-I agree with that, but they are taking the money we have saved over the years and wasting it on their pet projects. That is OUR money, not the governments.
Social Security shouldn’t be used for anything except social security. And if someone hasn’t worked and hasn’t paid onto it, then they should be entitled to it either. There’s too many government programs already that give to the lazy people in this country.

I witnessed some road rage this morning on my way to Menards. While west bound in front of the Kmart building, there was an east bound vehicle traveling in the left lane, and a motorcycle in the right lane about a car length behind the car. The car switched lanes, no signal, and almost run the motorcycle off the road. Needless to say, the guy on the Honda wasn’t to happy. I could hear him hollering at the woman as we passed each other. Obviously she had no idea he was there, as she chatted with her passenger. Hondas are quiet running motorcycles and this could have ended badly. There is something beneficial about loud motorcycles, contrary to some beliefs.
Sad. Wish people would slow down and pay attention behind the wheel.

Warning: last Wednesday a semi bald guy leaving Highland Park Golf Course in a white Lincoln car was very intoxicated. Headed south down Rhode Island and then west down 12th. I have seen him many times on Wednesday’s all over the road…Watch out for Wednesday’s at 6:45 ish.
