Shopping malls, in general, are dying. This isn’t simply a Mason City problem, it’s a nationwide problem. They’ve been crushed by the internet as well as other factors. Once Southbridge is done, how the property is developed going forward will be a crucial component to MC turning the corner and becoming a place people want to move to again. Keeping and reusing that structure would be difficult.
Southbridge Mall’s current problems are result of horrible new management and ding-heads at city hall. Management forced out Jitters Coffee by demanding that Jitters pay $20.000, for a new rooftop heat-cool unit. Some local churches asked about renting the old movie theaters there and where turned away. The people at city hall and the chamber have been told about all this with no result. The new mall management is a huge company based in Chicago and not local.
Have been reading some comments on Facebook that I actually agree with!!1 Why couldn’t Marshall’s fill the space that Penney’s is vacating??? Since Kohl’s contract would not allow it….it would be a perfect spot and maybe a start to bigger and better things for downtown and the middle class….
Made a visit to Southbridge Mall yesterday, and the mall seemed pretty busy for the holiday season being over. I don’t undetstand why the city can’t offer some incentives to other businesses and stores to come here and utilize the space there. Old Navy, Gordmans, Matshalls just to name a few. Maybe it’s time the current mall manager gets fired and get someone in there that knows what they’re doing. It all started going downhill when the current manager came on board.
The Mason City boys lost another basketball game today. They were defeated 74 – 70 in overtime by West Fork. Well, at least it wasn’t a blow out.
anyone else thinks the ‘spin’ that tournquist and the council tried to make on Lionel Foster is almost comical. No where have I ever seen an employee terminated awarded $240,000 bucks unless SOMETHING, I mean something was prevalent. Also I guess this is why Scott T and Erik Bookmeyer don’t have real jobs or work in real companies, Mechanical Air showed Scottie boy the door and Bookmeyer will go down in history as just another elitist wannabe that is more or less a racists

I think if someone would open the movie theater back up that would help the mall alot? I dont understand why they dont show movies their anymore
And Sears will be next they just want to close a little over a 100 changed to 235 nationwide now you can bet MC will be on that list.
Just heard of JCPenney closing in April.What a Mall we have! We tore our downtown for this.Jolas what a great idea the Mall was.
As predicted. I’m not looking forward to seeing that large empty money pit on a daily basis. What a shame, I remember as a young teen walking up federal past Casey’s Drug Store, Sam Raises, Harry’s Sweet Shop, Golden Rule etc. Early evening the street was lined with shoppers, and especially busy on Friday and Saturday. What a great time that was. It’s all gone now, except for the cobweb corners of my mind. What a Shame…

I heard that American Eagle was closing a bunch of stores and that the one in Southbridge will be one of them. Another one bites the dust…bets on how long the mall will be able to limp on after this?
Ghost, thought you said you were leaving? I knew you wouldn’t. Your comment about the HRC should be called the Black and Latino oversight committee was unacceptable. In fact, many of your comments are unacceptable. You need to be gone. It’s one thing to have banter back and forth regarding issues, it’s another to do what you have done on this site to many. Called vulgar names, bigotry, etc. I hope that NIT blocks you once and for all from this site.
I stuck around for a few comments to say goodbye to Buzz (my only real friend on NIT) whomever he is, and to finish the string about the Mitchell county tire dump. I’m not getting run off by anyone so don’t feel triumphant. If none of these slurs written against me are from Matt and NIT, then my parting apologies. It’s near impossible to know whom is who. As I’ve helped Matt with many of the design features here on NIT, he should figure out the duplicity and design in a protection
