WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA), announced today that Iowa will receive $7,419,062 million from the U.S. Department of Human Health and Human Services’ (HHS) Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) to help eligible Iowans meet home energy costs. Today’s funding was made possible by a $169 million increase in funding for LIHEAP that Harkin secured in the Fiscal Year 2014 Omnibus. Harkin is the Chairman of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies (LHHS subcommittee) that oversees these initiatives.
“This winter’s severe cold weather coupled with rising energy-related costs makes this funding all the more urgent for Iowans struggling with their home-heating bills,” said Harkin. “Access to LIHEAP provides a safety net for low-income households, especially those with children, people with disabilities, and senior citizens. Without this assistance, thousands of families in Iowa face the impossible choice between paying their heating bills or putting food on the table. This funding is welcome relief at an urgent time for Iowans.”
In fiscal year 2014, Iowa received $53,734,767 in LIHEAP funding, $2,442,407 more than in fiscal year 2013. Last year, this program provided home heating assistance to approximately 86,000 Iowan households.
