Meeks rolls, Cyclones crown three at Kaye Young held at NIACC

logo_iowa_state_cyclonesMASON CITY, Iowa – The Iowa State wrestling team crowned three champions at the Kaye Young Open Saturday on the campus of North Iowa Area Community College.

Sophomore John Meeks, who is wrestling up a weight class this season, rolled to the title at 141 pounds. The Des Moines, Iowa native, went 5-0 on the day with two major decisions and two wins by fall.

Redshirt freshman Cameron Thomson and true freshman Jacyn Goebel were the Cyclones’ other two champions on the day. Thomson went 4-0 with a pin and three wins by decision en route to the title at 174 pounds. Goebel, who hails from Masonville, Iowa, went 4-0 with a pin and a major decision en route to the title at 197 pounds.

Freshman Colin Strickland had the lone runner-up finish on the day for the Cyclones. Strickland went 3-1 with a major decision en route to his second-place finish at 157 pounds.

Four more Cyclones took third at their respective weights. Redshirt freshman Kyle Larson went 4-1 with one major decision and one tech fall to take third at 125 pounds. Junior Wil Stetzel went 4-1 with a tech fall and two points to take third at 149 pounds. Freshman Blyane Briceno with 4-1 with two pins and a tech fall to take third at 157 pounds. Redshirt sophomore Tyler Swope went 6-1 with four pins en route to a third-place finish at 285 pounds.

Iowa State, who is ranked No. 16 in the first USA Today/NWCA/AWN Coaches Poll team rankings, opens the dual season Thursday evening at Hilton Coliseum, facing Drexel and Grand View back-to-back in a double-dual.
