AMES – Iowa State (0-2, 0-0 Big 12) hits the road for the first time this season at Tulsa (1-2, 0-0 C-USA) Thursday night. The teams met twice last season, as the Cyclones won the season-opener, 38-23 in Ames. Tulsa got revenge when the two teams met in the 2012 Liberty Bowl in Memphis, Tenn., 31-17. Iowa State won the other previous meeting between the two schools, 27-6 at Tulsa in 1961 to claim the all-time series lead at 2-1.
Iowa State is looking for its first win of the season after dropping a pair of games at home to UNI and Iowa to begin the year. Both deficits were by eight points or below.
Head coach Paul Rhoads is in his fifth season as the Cyclone leader with a career record of 24- 29. He’s led the Cyclones to three bowl games (2009 Insight Bowl, 2011 Pinstripe Bowl, 2012 Liberty Bowl) in his first four seasons. Rhoads has recorded a win over a ranked team in each of the last three seasons, the only coach in school history to achieve the feat.
