MASON CITY – The Mason City Mohawks football team got a police and fire escort out of town before their big game against the Clear Lake Lions.

The game will be played annually after the rivalry was renewed last year.  The two teams had not played in decades

At Lions Field in Clear Lake, a big turnout was on hand.  Mohawk fans were instructed to wear red and there were plenty of those folks in the stands and walking about; the stands were full.

The highly-ranked Clear Lake Lions won the game, 41-20 after trailing at halftime.

  1. Also Clear Lake has a Ex-NFL player as a volunteer coach, I believe if not mistaken.CL has 2-3 ExNFL players own homes on S. Shore area. Not that they are all involved in CL football but think one is and you got too think that might help just a little.

  2. A few months back, the administration said (threatened) that if Mason City taxpayers didn’t ante up and vote for the education tax levy, that the district would have to eliminate that paid coaching staff positions. Well I’m thinking that would have been an outstanding move. Our MCHS athletes have been coached be volunteer coaches for years in little league, “Pop Warner”, and AAU teams and have won championships in their regions. When these kids reach High School it all falls apart. I’m not sure, but I believe Clear Lake has a paid head coach and a couple of paid assistant coaches and nearly eight volunteer coaches. Mason City, a head coach and a couple assistant coaches that are paid and that is it. Seriously, people where do you think the problem lies?

  3. I was so impressed in how our community rallied around our kids! They are the community of tomorrow! Thanks for playing your hearts out! I hope you felt that just for one moment we as a community totally supported you and were rooting for you!

  4. I do not believe that the kids who play for Clear Lake are any better athlete’s than the kids from Mason City. Mason City has been a doormat for years. When are they going to wake up and get new coaches?

    1. The Mohawks were runners up after Alverez actually, made play offs a couple of times in the 80s, than they didn’t win again until the mid 90s, one winning seaso in the 90s. Then they had at least four winning seasons in the last decade. How can anyone forget the Jeff Horner, Brady Foster and Cody Huisman year? Then I know they were 5-4 in the previous two years before Penner took over.

      1. I think the early 1990’s teams didn’t even win one single game. Pretty sure they were 0-10 every year from 1988, 1989, 1990 and 1991. If I’m not mistaken Travis Hickey was on some of those teams.
