Three hurt in two-vehicle accident near Floyd

FLOYD, IOWA – Three people were hurt in a two-vehicle accident near Floyd on Monday afternoon.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, the accident took place on Monday, May 10, 2021 at about 2:25 PM. A 2005 Chevy Suburban driven by 19-year-old Elizabeth Schmidt of Charles City was westbound on county road B33 west of Quail Avenue when Schmidt attempted to pass a road grader that was also westbound. The grader was kicking up dust and obscuring visibility. This moment, an eastbound 2015 Ford Edge driven by 35-year-old Brandon Hummel of Riceville approached. The vehicles collided head-on in the eastbound lane.

As a result, Schmidt was injured and airlifted to Mercy Hospital in Mason City. Hummel was also injured and transported by ground ambulance to Mercy Hospital in Mason City. A passenger in the Suburban, 20-year-old Joseph Holzer of Charles City, was transported by ground ambulance to Mercy Hospital in Mason City.

The accident remains under invetigation. The Iowa State Patrol was assisted by Cowell Fire Dept., Floyd Fire Dept., Charles City EMS, and Floyd Co Sheriff Department.
