MASON CITY – Babies are fragile… please do not shake them.
This week at the National Night Out event at Mason City’s East Park, a shaken baby syndrome simulation doll was on display and there to prove just how little it takes to injure a child.
Volunteer Robin McClelland, with the North Iowa Child Abuse Prevention Council, demonstrated on “Kara” how much trauma is caused when an angry or careless person shakes a baby.
McClelland shook Kara, and red lights lit up on the baby’s head, showing where brain trauma would likely occur after a violent shake to a child.
“Her brain will light up when we do any damage to her,” McClelland said. The doll ceased crying when it was shook, and the red lights popped up with a second or two of being shook.
“She stopped crying because she can’t cry, because she is either unconscious or has been killed. It doesn’t take much to damage a baby.”
“No baby has ever died from crying. It’s OK to walk away until you settle down.”
Those caring for children are reminded that of they need a break, to call a local Charlie Brown Daycare at 641-424-0065. Hours available are 5:30 AM to 7 PM. Children ages 0-12 are accepted.

Overcharging that you can’t prove and charge stacking is STILL going on 20 years later. Studies have shown you have to be out of your mind in the fist place to be a prosecutor. We has one right here in Mason who was caught sneaking into homes for womens panties. He said it was a habit from when he was young. Richard Thomkins was his name I believe. I think the pantie sniffer was in his 40’s when caught breaking into bedrooms.
Peter, I have spoken to you about your loss some time ago, and this was a tragedy. I sincerely hope you are finding some peace these days.

@Peter L.- I am sorry to hear about your loss. I guess I heard about that but didn’t put it together.
