BUCHANAN COUNTY – A cemetery suffered big damages and an Iowa man went to the hospital after he lost control of his Toyota on a rainy night and left the roadway.

On Monday, December 25, 2023, at approximately 7:45 PM, Buchanan County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a report of a motor vehicle accident near the intersection of Water Street and Racine Avenue in Quasqueton. According to the investigation, a 2011 Toyota Venza operated by Richard Baskerville of Palo was traveling southbound on Racine Avenue where the roadway curves into Water Street in Quasqueton. Baskerville did not see the curve due to rain and light reflections, and failed to negotiate the curve. The vehicle left the roadway and entered a cemetery, striking multiple headstones and decorations before coming to rest in the cemetery.

As a result of the crash, Baskerville was transported to Mercy Hospital in Cedar Rapids with unspecified injuries. Damage was estimated at $9,000 to the Baskerville vehicle and approximately $50,000 to the cemetery.

The Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Quasqueton Fire Department and AMR Ambulance Service.
